[noob] Review: K&N FiPK
K&N FiPK
Price: ~230$ from KensAutoWarehouse
Packaging 9/10: Awesome, came with everything you need to get this done for the most part.
Product look 5/10: While it doesn't look bad, it's no ARC Heatsoak Bling.
Installation 8/10 [Personal 3/10 grrr]: The installation should have been easy, it really should have. That's why I have two numbers. You're supposed to have a 5/8" drill bit to tap a hole for the air temp sensor. Well low and behold, neither I nor any of my neighbors have a 5/8" drill bit (JESUS that's big). After running around trying to get ahold of one, late on a friday night, we gave up and used our head. We used a smaller drill bit, and filed away to 5/8".
Performance 9/10: So I suppose this is where things get subjective, so I'm going to try and break it down as clearly as possible. Everyone has different idea's what they want out of their mods.
a) No more bog: This is HUGEEEEE for me since I live in the bay area and am often commuting in traffic. The stock airbox bog made me want to shoot myself in traffic. Regardless of gains or not; this factor made the $230 worth it alone.
b) Throttle response: Holy #$!@ batman. I feel like I have 10x more control over throttle timing. There doesn't seem to be much (if any) throttle delay, unless in very low rpm's.
c) Sound: I suppose this too is subjective, but I love the sound. Cruising it has a very subtle groaning sound. That sort of sound that says: This is a quick car, but I don't want to brag about it. When going into WOT: This thing roars, and deep too. Amazingly clean sound, same description as cruising.... but much louder, and not so much hiding :p.
d) Power: This is the most subjective part since it's all butt dyno. Trying to measure actual whp gains would be really hard. There's definately more power; but trying to decipher if that's throttle response, sensation, placebo, or actual whp is a bit difficult. If I had to take a stab in the dark, on my otherwise stock ap2 I'd say there's been maybe a 3-5whp gain. Could be less, could be more. I've seen some people say they've gotten 8whp out of it, other claiming less. But I have no idea what kind of dyno their using, what other mods are involved, etc. But there definately seems to be more power than just throttle response.
Overall Satisfaction 8.5/10: Like I said above, the bog issue alone made this $230 purchase worth it. The throttle response is beautiful now, and the sound is gorgeous. Subtracted 1 point because I'm sure there's another product that makes more power, and nothing is perfect. Subtracted .5 points because it looks rather plain jane inside of such a beautiful engine bay.
