Default Help with 90 civic dx

Hello Honda people, I am a VW guy but just looked at a 90 Civic dx today with a 4 speed auto. The car is pretty clean and cheap and I need a car like that! Here is my problem, the tranny whines and shifts or should I say slips into second at high rpm and then just slips until you stop the car and turn the key off and then on and then it will kick in again and if you don't stop it will go ok. It has 134,000 miles on it and the guy wants $500 which is all I really have, is this an easy fix or do I need a tranny????

I did some research on line and it seems like the cars had a tranny weekness??

Thanks guys!!!!
