Default CTR EG Revival/Build Thread

Well most of this is taken from my old build thread (https://honda-tech.com/forums/appearance-build-threads-122/boosted-crx-turbod-ed7-build-timeline-2679776/), but since I sold off the EF for now, I thought I would make a second thread for the EG. A few weeks ago I came across an EG with fresh paint and lots of goodies that needed some open heart surgery. It got delivered a to my GFs place and I started cleaning up the engine bay and all of the parts that needed some lovin with some concentrated simple green.

Here she was waiting for me.

Popped the hood and here lies half of a JDM B16B. The previous owner thought it would be fun to hold the car at 8,000rpms on the highway and this is the result. Not a good way to treat a rare motor with under 70,000KMS.

It came with two Type R lips, one is brand new. Also in Nov09 it got a fresh paintjob.

Mugen style twin-loop. Exited to hear this actually, Ive always wanted to hear one.

The CF accents the BG33-P nicely.

Shot of the low kms shortblock. Im hoping after the head gets back from the machine shop the piston rings still have good compression. Anyone know the best way to get rid of the surface rust on the tops of the cylinders? Im thinking brake-kleen and paper towel.

ST rear sway bar, Skunk2 LCAs, Skunk2 ProS coilovers. Cant wait to see how she corners.

EG Ferio cluster and Apexi VAFC.

The engine bay after I taped off the block.

Self explainable.

And after the Simple Green.

Some parts waiting on the head to return from the machine shop.

Came with a polished Benen tow hook so I tossed it on.

And just because I had all three of my cars in a row I took a few more pics before calling it a day.

----

A few days later I talked to my machine guy, the head needs a full rebuild and he says there is a good chance the block warped a little with the head so it looks like I'm gonna pull it out, inspect the bearings, ball-hone it and throw in a new set of rings. More work then I was hoping but I got the car for about half the cost of a full B16B swap from HMO so I'm still happy.

I also grabbed a Cometic head gasket, 4L of Royal Purp, K&N oil filter and some BK7RE's. I'm also gonna get some Torco break-in oil and a shitty filter for break in before it gets the purple stuff.

----

A day or two later I took half of the a/c components out of the engine bay and dropped the block. While everything is at the machine shop I figured since I had the supplies for the wiretuck anyways, I might as well tuck the EG's bay while the engine is out, clean up the bay and maybe touch up some paint if I have time. Anywise, onto the pics.

After I got rid of a/c stuff, exhaust, wiring harness etc

After unbolting halfshaft, bellhousing bolts and engine mounts I pulled it out of the tranny.

Two jacks makes this all easy work if you got a buddy.

Lower it down guiding it as it goes.

I threw a mat down so once it's on the ground all ya gotta do is slide it out...

...like so.

And this is how it sits today, tomorrow morning I will stripped it down to bare block, inspect it and send it in for a hone/deck.

----

Well, now the engines been in the machine shop for the last few days, I decided to go with new oversized pistons so I took a cruise to Evo Garage in Richmond and got a new set of OEM slugs. I recommend these guys for any JDM parts, real chill, didn't mind showing me an 09 CR that they were working on out back. Anyways onto the pics.

Once the motors done in the machine shop here in the next couple days I just need some rings, barings and gaskets then it all goes back together.

I'm hoping I get the engine back tomorrow, but that's also the day I get keys to my new place so I hope I got time to get this little ***** up and running again, I can't wait!

Yup, just with ARPs, Cometic HG (copper sprayed), Mahle OS rings, and Clevite bearings. Although I wouldn't mind finding an ITR crank then getting some Eagles/SRP's and stroking out out to a 81.25mm x 87.2mm. But I don't have the time to find a crank, I wanna drive this already so I can sell my DC.

Yeah I would want to drive it too lol. I've always wanted a B16b, but they're kind of pricey.
Sounds like it's going to be a strong engine when you done. Good luck
Keep us updated, I can't wait to see finished pics

Well, OEM is 10.8:1, but with a little off the head and block plus the .25mm overbore, I'm guessing in the low/mid 11.X:1 range. Chevron 94oct here I come!

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of updates lately, I moved about a week ago and still don't have internet at my place. The EGs making some progress but since I have no way of hosting pics without internet I haven't took any pics.

The motor came back from the machine shop (Christmas in Feb :D) with the head fully rebuilt and the block decked and bored to 81.25mm and also the crank got micropolished. I bolted up the bottom end last night and painted all the alt brackets and motor mounts flat black then taped up the block and shot it with dark gray engine enamel. I also got a spray can of BG33-P mixed up to touch up some spots under the hood and colour match the valve cover. Should look pretty clean when it's in there.

I'm hoping my buddy can lend me his engine hoist so I can build it all on the stand tonight and lift it in, otherwise I'm gonna have to lift the block in by hand and assemble the rest of the motor in the engine bay. So stay tuned, I'm hoping to have er up and running in the next few days and I promise to update soon with pics.

Yeah the lack of torque will kinda suck, I'm almost disapointed that I didnt find a cheap B20 block and send that in with the head but **** it, run what you got right?

Anyways, now that I got internet at my place, here's an update of where I'm at.

Doing a small wire tuck and fixing some hackjob wiring.

Replacing all the M6 bolts with SS allan heads

Christmas in Feb, got everything back from my machinist :D

He even stripped the valvecover for me

There's the OEM CTR oversized pistons.

The head and block looking real fresh

Plastigauging the crank

Lubing it up before I slide the shaft in

In she goes

Took some time and painted all the brackets flat black and the block dark gray

Trying to drop it in, there just isn't enough room to shoehorn it in without removing the tranny, so **** it, the trannys gotta come out.

I'm bringing the camera with me so I'll update again once I get the ***** in there, later!

So I've been driving the car for about a week but only got about 250kms on it, so the rings still haven't sealed fully (still puffing blue), since then I did the headgasket/tbelt because the shitty Cometic was leaking oil onto the block, while doing that I saw some fraying on the timing belt due to me forgetting the concave washer on the crank gear. Anyways, here's some pics.

A peek at the SS bolts I got for the fenders/lights.

I washed the car for the first time today and man the paint pops in the sun, I love teal haha. I also painted the valve cover and put some FM Syncromesh in the tranny today hoping it might fix my minimal third gear crunch before it gets worse. I'll get some pics up soon of the colour matched valve cover.

Next is a 3" icebox intake and a real header, then rims when I get my tax return.

And just because everyone loves ripper vids, I know it's shitty quality. I need to charge my video cam and take some real vids soon.

Nice job on getting it back together, even though it has to come somewhat appart again lol. Either way looks great in there, like those SS bolts too, was debating on that style or the flush mount washer ones for mine.
