Default Inexpensive radio system for driver comms

I need something for the LeMons car to let the crew talk to the driver. Last year I used my kid's Motorola 2-way radio with a hands-free in-ear speaker with a mic in the cord that I got from HH Gregg. It kind of worked sometimes (much like the LeMons car itself), but the ear piece fell out a lot and it was hard to make out anything more complicated that "PIT" or "SMOKE". This year I was going to make an adapter so I could use a secure over-the-ear cell phone hands-free setup with it, but I was also wondering if there was a reasonably priced (cheap) system that I could pick up for this. Google searching led me to some $800 setups, and searching eBay for "track radio" just brought up an astonishing selection of car stereos with 8-track players.

I too went throught this dilemma. When I started racing I was poor and always looking for ways to do it the cheapest way possible. I tried so many different radio, using FRS, call phone and such. Until I found out the biggest issue is none of them using noise cancellation mic. This cause a lot of background noise to be transferee through and hard to hear clearly. None of the earphone available out there also has sealing capabilities at the time. Nowadays there are a lot of in-ear earphones. Still doesn't solve the noise cancelling issue and the in-ear is pretty bulky it is hard to wear helmet over it.

I finally found, the now discontinued 5 watts commercial type radio from radio shack. It uses BNC connection for the antenna so you can connect external antenna which make a huge difference. I bought the in-car harness from sampson racing. Coupled with 5 watts powerful radio it can be used nearly everywhere around the track.

I've moved on to a different setup, now. I have the complete kit (minus helmet kit) for sale now. If you're interested, email me and I'll send pictures.
