Default exhaust question

setup: b16a, mugen 4-1, skunk2 2.25 test pipe, apexi ws2 exhaust

problem: between the rpm's of 3500-4000 my exhaust gets extremely loud. This is about 65-70 mph. i cannot take it any longer and must do something to quiet it down. its realy more annoying than anything and makes my car sound like super ricer. not to mention the apexi ws2 already looks like a giant fart can. any speed below or above 65-70 my exhaust is totally tolerable. my work commute is all highway and you literally cannot even talk to anyone in the car when im in between those speeds. before i put on the mugen 4-1 and test pipe, i did not have this problem.

1. would changing to a complete 2.25 exhaust with a type r or s2k muffler make much of a difference in quieting it down?

2. is it the test pipe that is causing the excessive drone at this rpm range?

ps. theres no way in hell im removing the mugen 4-1, it took me forever to track down a legit b16a mugen 4-1

Post pics of the exhaust. I've never heard of the WS2 being intolerable nor does it fartcan like. You sure its the real deal? Not an N1?

the test pipe does make it louder.

you can always cut your exhaust and throw in glass packs to bring it down a lil.

Glass packs wont last more than 3-6 months. Put a good 14" resonator somewhere on your exhaust and the rasp will go away. Deleting the cat is what is making the ricer noise. A muffler cuts away low pitch sound and resonators lower high pitch sounds.

The test pipe will make a raspy sound, the ws2 is a good quite nice sounding muffler, I dont belive that to be the issue unless its falling apart, in that case a vibrant street power exhuast is nice and stock looking and sound good i run one on a 2.25 exhuast. The mugen 4-1 header will add a little more sound but wont be rapsy, A resonator would help in lowering the sound DB and the raspyness. i would recommend not using the test pipe as you dont gain but maybe 1-3hp on a basicaly stock motor. I would pick up a magnaflow cat, or a OBx cat i have one, random technology and smsp makes the best cats i know of, not sure on how they sound but im sure if you ask around someone can verify. OBX has the cheapest cats mine has about 20,000miles works fine, and i have a obx 4-1 header obx cat and obx piping cut the muffler off and added a vibrant muffler, sounds really good.

Yes but you removed a thick walled, sound deadening, cat and replaced it with a thin piece of, noise amplifying, tin/or stainless. When you should have replaced it with another resonator or a high flow cat.

i think i am going to go with a 2.25 magnaflow catback and see how that sounds. if its too loud i can replace the magnaflow muffler with a 2.25 vibrant flat black muffler. after that i would address the test pipe situation. the magnaflow catback system is stainless steel and its only 350 shipped. im hoping to going down in piping size will reduce the sound quite a bit. after i get my exhaust set up to how i want it, i plan on doing a cold air setup and hitting the dyno just to see what its making. its a great setup for a daily driver and has plenty of power to go with the shorter gearing.

adding a magnaflow cat-back with a test pipe will still sound raspy. Adding a small second resonator will cost you less at a muffler shop and it will do a big difference. But it's your money.

I made a 2.25'' exhaust with a 6" resonator welded to a toyota camry resonator into a cheap oval muffler and it sounded great, and I usually dont like 4 cyl exhaust noise.

im not concerned about the raspy sound that a test pipe makes. the sound level of my exhaust is what i dont like. i dont like how my exhaust gets unbearably loud between 3500-4000 rpms's. if that is cause by the test pipe then i will definitely change to a high flow cat. i just want it to be quieter. im hoping switching to a smaller piping size will do that

Well, then I think installing a high flow cat would be your best option.
