Zinc oil additive?
For a while I have been a little concerned about newer engine oils containing less zinc.

Crower recommends this additive, but has anyone here actually used it. Opinions and/or experiences are welcome.

Zinc content has been reduced in lots of oils since 2003 or so. That's one of the main reasons, Mobile 1 oil is not as good as it used to be. Keep in mind though, not all zinc additives are the same

I have used both zddplus additive and Joe gibbs oil. Joe gibbs states that mixing a additive like zddplus in with conventional oil is not the best way, but rather a complete oil with the right mix should be used from the get go.
I'm not trying to threadjack but adding to the thread in hopes of getting your question answered...What do you guys think of Valvoline VR1 for a dd?

I've been debating between the amsoil dominator 10w-30 or the brad penn green oil not sure yet though. I've seen mixed reports on the brad penn not containing the claimed amount of zddp.
As for Joe Gibbs stating that mixing a additive like zddplus in with conventional oil is not the best way. Why? What is the difference in mixing at the production plant compared to mixing it in a oil bottle or in the motor?
I would also like to know if racing oil like the conventional VR1 is good to use in DD vehicles. It should have higher zinc levels since it is a racing oil, right? What would be the pros and cons of running racing oil on a DD changing oil every 3000 to 5000 miles?
So does oils that says for high mileage vehicle contain more zinc additives, or no? If it does I'll just buy those for now on.
How much zinc is to much zinc in the oil? Since it provide a barrier between two parts wouldn't it be better to have more.

Look into your diesel oils fellas... Shell Rotella is still one of the highest quality oils out there and since its used in diesel apps it doesn't have to meet the strict passenger car standards which allows it to keep the zinc content. I hear the Valvoline VR1 oils are pretty good and high in Zinc as well but I know the shell rotella works! I use it in almost everything I drive.

"We do not sell or recommend oil additives because it is the complete package of additives in balance with each other that ultimately protect the engine."
This would be bad for a passenger car expecting to go 5k miles between oil changes. A drag car making 6 passes or a roadrace car running a 45 minute sprint between oil changes would certainly love racing oils though.
So, I talked to a Chemical Engineer. He said that ZDDP is not a particulate in oil. Adding ZDDPlus (or something equivalent) would be the same as having oil with a a higher ZDDP level to begin with. He also said that since ZDDP does not become effective until it is warm, so you would have the same amount of protection at start-up, but once the oil is warm it would provide the advertised benefits.
Zinc is mainly a high pressure additive in oil. With more and more engines having roller components the need for zinc is dimenishing. In our machine shop we recommend that all fresh engines (rebuilts) be first run with Shell Rotella. Rottella "T" has one of the highest zinc contents still available. For additional protection Crane Cams packages a additive for initial "cam break in" in non roller applications. The combination of both is a solid "first start up" oil.
The use of Rotella oils offers outstanding protection in both gas or diesel. The high heat additives and the extra detergency of diesel oils give good overall protection for turbo and non turbo uses. the "T" oil is petroleum based and comes in 10w40 or 15w40 as well.

i picked up a thing of lucas oil zinc additive that i was only gonna mix in with the oil on start up and break in .. dont know how well of a additive it is or how well it would work
I use 1/4 bottle of Redline Engine Break-in additive every oil change.
On the forum bobistheoilguy, many people use it to boost ZDDP. No detrimental effects yet. My engine got a bit quieter at 3800rpm , where i'm at on the hwy in 5th gear.

Watch out using too much ZDDP additives. ZDDP and detergents are both polar molecules (they are attracted to the metal) and fight for real estate in the engine. If you add too much ZDDP it will displace the detergents. You may have an engine that will not wear out but it will be filled with sludge.
