Check out Bisimoto.com

The guy is the SOHC guru and he can even customize a cam for your application.

Good luck!

would it make a difference in 1/4 mile time. right now my d16y8 ej8 is 15.9 sec. maybe faster now. added a few more upgrades. would it be 15.6? would valve adjustment be necessary?

Its only going to make a difference if it is properly installed AND the motor is tuned for it. Otherwise it won't do jack but possibly cause you more problems.

Typically, (not all the time of course, as there are variances in what is considered "stage 1") you will not need a valvetrain upgrade for lightly modified cams. Post the specs or take them to mechanic experienced with cams. Someone should be able to give you an exact answer. Hell, call of the cam companies you are looking at and see if you can get a direct answer from them.

Yup might as well upgrade valves AND springs AND cam gear AND pistons AND rods AND ARP everything AND port n polish AND intake manifold AND snail shell......

Just kidding
You shouldnt need headwork for mild (aka stage 1) cam.
Just make sure tune it to the new cam profiles.
Also depending on the mileage and when the last valve adjustment was done you might have to do that regardless of cam or no cam.
But if you get a cam then definitely adjust the valves

I have a crower stage 2 camshaft in my y8 now. Upgraded the valve springs and retainers to super techs. You will need tuning though. Once i had a decent base tune on my ecu, I did feel a power gain...especially in the higher rpms.

Friend has one in his turbo D16y8 and it has worked well. Sounds good too.

This is purely out of curiosity, but have people seen decent results with the Zex cams? I just haven't heard much about them in the SOHCs. Anyone got any more info about them?

Years ago, a buddy of mine put a "stage 2" Zex cam in his sohc and made a decent amount of power. Kinda the same compared to the crower set-up I have now.

He didn't tune it though. Why? I don't know. He blew the motor when he installed a Greddy turbo kit, reset the blue box and couldn't figure out how to re-tune the box (he cleared the memory/tune when he reset it). Ran too rich, gas leaked through the rings and mixed with oil... bye bye motor.

I'm in the same boat as you. Except mine is a d16z6 . Debating on wether to build my d or swap to a b. But b swaps in California are a pain. I would like to bar so I have no problems with cops. But thats a issue I wouldn't have with a built d. Maybe even a jrsc kit .

stage 1 is barely much better than stock so na as long as you dont pass red line valve springs and all that is useless. just get some SUPER TECH valve springs or bisi' springs and you will be golden everything else is fine not worth changing. i stock valve train is good for 7.500 but your rods are under heavy pressure to. i learned from experience get arp rod bolts at least and leave it at 8.200 make sure you get a new oem oil pump and port it out b4 you spin a bearing y-series spin bearings all the time.
