01 Accord LX-V6, dead tranny, worth fixing myself?
Hello,
My mother has a 2001 Honda Accord, V6, automatic, 85000 mi. The check engine light is on with P0740, it's starting to slip, and the dealer and a tranny shop both told her to replace the transmission.
The tranny shop wants $2000, but I'm thinking of doing the job myself. I got a quote for $675 for a used tranny, shipped. I'm pretty handy, and I did the clutch on my Subaru.
My questions are:
Is this transmission job exceptionally easy or hard?
Do I have to pull the engine from the car to do the tranny? It's also due for a timing belt. If I'm doing both jobs, should I pull the engine?
Should I drop $70 on the FSM, or will the $20 Haynes manual get me through this job?
I'd prefer a reman transmission, but cost is a concern. I think I'll just throw in a used one. Is that a stupid idea?
Thanks for your help!
Robert

those tranny were junk, dealers replaced ALOT of them, might still have an honor setup.
Honda dropped the ball on them, BADLY!
I would NOT get a used one unless it has been rebuilt by Honda in Ohio.

They extended the warranty to 7 years / 100kmi, but the car is 9 years old now. The dealer wanted $4000 to do the job, and he didn't offer to get Honda to split the bill.
But how hard of a job is it?
