gsr head
Hey quick question. I just picked up a gsr head from a buddy for 20 bucks but it doesn't have any cams or caps. I was just wondering if any cam caps from any gsr will work or what i have to do for them. i do plan on putting different cams probly skunk 2 and different valvetrain in it but i need caps first. Just wondering what i need to do for them.

From what I understand each set of cam caps are machined specifically for the head they're going in. So it's not so much, just pick a set up and put'em on.
no.. you have to have the caps line bored, as they are cast, and then cut at the factory.. that is why you dont mix them up when rebuilding a head... the need to sit perfectly flush, otherwise you will tear up your cam journals and eat through the saddles where the journals sit...
if you do it, then you will have to line bore it.. you dont want to put it all together and eat your cam..

you can get used ones.. i don even think they sell them new, because they arent a separate part.. they are cast with the head, and then cut off in a machine..
you can probably get used ones, and have them line bored at a shop, if they fit well enough..

OP, a head without cam caps is typically considered useless. The caps are custom machined to the head. Caps from another head are not going to be identical, and pose a risk.
The value of your head is the springs, valves, rockers, and the scrap weight of aluminum. Sure you could run the head with random caps, but it is not proper and will most likely lead to issues.

so even if i got caps and had it line bored at the machine shop is it worth anything to even build the head at all or just get rid of it and buy something else. i just don't want to spend the money on it and not be worth it.
B-series heads do not have cam journal bearings. You can not remove much material before you are out of tolerance. (I do not have the service manual in front of me.)
If you tried to find caps and hone, you would have to get the caps from another head and then pay for the machining. The end result would be a maybe. What happened to the original caps? A careful owner would store them one the head.
