91 accord with a V TEC
I bought a 91 accord coupe EX manual transmission 4-cylinders VTEC F22B The engine is from a 95 accord . I was told I would need to change the CPU in order to have the VTEC engage. My question is what type of CPU would I need to purchase. The Car Runs Pretty Good But It Could Run Better .. Thank u
although technically you could call it a CPU the common term is ECU. this will help you find the right component to start with.
although i think there is a factory ECU that would work i couldn't tell you which for sure. what i do know.. you can have an P28 ECU chipped to work with that engine allowing VTEC to function. you'll find plenty of info in the >Accord FAQ< section about that.

OP will most likely need to add the wires for VTEC similar to an H22 swap in an LX or DX Accord and then switch the ECU. Since he's already OBDI the OBDI ECU from a 94 or 95 Accord should work.
I believe the pinouts for those ECUs are in the FAQ
It is a lot more than a CPU - a "computer", yes but you not a CPU....

Found that, I can't find a decisive thing saying the Accord switches in '92 like Civics, Integras and Preludes from OBD0 to OBDI
*edit*
Found it, apparently I was correct the first time as was jdmwannabe

90-93 Accords are all OBD1.
So, I called Honda service at my local dealer to get the info. The first guy I talked to said obd0. Just to make sure, before I came back here with a big chest and started flaming, I called a different dealer and was told obd1. So, sorry bout that guys.
That being said, a ecu out of 94-95 EX will work, plug and play. ECU ID - P0A-A01 for the manual.

you meet the nicest people in an accord
and he'd still have to wire up vtec, which is easy as pie!

Alvarado - Do a google search for vtec controller. And I'm pretty sure you can find a write up on HT about the install.
Make sure if you buy a VTEC controller that you don't go setting your VTEC for 4500 or 5K like an H22. The F22B1 cam is designed for VTEC to engage down in the 3200 - 3800 RPM range. If you try to change it from that it will just fall flat on it's face.
IMO the best thing to do would be to find a used OBD1 P0A ECU. Saw a few on ebay for around $50 - $60.

I am learning about the VTEC engine. i understand it is variable timing. With early 90's accords, approx. what would be the HP gain and fuel mileage? Just a brief description would be great. thanks
Vtec doesn't give you more max power. It increases power in the low/mid range. When choosing a cam for an engine, you basically have 2 choices - High rpm power, which makes your low/mid range weak, or strong low/mid range which makes your power fall off as rpm's rise. Vtec gives you the best of both worlds. It is actually Variable Timing and Lift Electronically Controlled, but VTLEC just doesn't roll off your tongue like the all mighty V-TACK.
