Default 91 octane tune on my teggy?

ok.. so i have seen many-a-stock car get 91 octane tunes, and pick up 5-25 hp, depending on the car..

Im wondering, has anyone just tuned the stock b18a for 91 octane? if so, how much of a difference did it make?

And im also curious about obd0 tuning.. is there a piggyback system or a chip for obd0 ecu's?

I haven't seen anybody do this but am also interested to find the difference it would make. I have no intentions of leaving my next car stock but I'm fascinated by what a good tune does. I'd really like to start studying it.

I guess the point is that you could run slightly leaner A/F ratios and still be safe from detonation. It's kind of hard for me to imagine it making enough of a gain on a B18A to be worth the cash for a tune, but I'm curious to see what the other opinions are.

well i have seen ford focus SVT's get 15-20 hp off of a 91 octane tune, and 17hp off of a 91 octane tune on an 07 civic Si, all of which were BONE STOCK.. so it stands to reason we could squeeze some more juice out of the stock/almost stock setup..

its not just leaning it out.. its advancing the ignition more aggressively, to the point where you HAVE to use 91 octane.. 91 octane doesnt do anything for performance if its not tuned for it..

so, to advance the timing, and lean it out a bit, and run on 91 octane, seems reasonable

High octane means ignition timing can be further advanced. This may or may not produce any increase in power, depending on the engine in discussion.

But really, a tune requires some form of programmable ECU, dyno time, and someone familiar with tuning.

If one were to tackle the cost of retuning the car, swapping head gaskets to raise the compression and adding adjustable cam gears might allow the tuner to better take advantage of the increased octane.

I doubt the gains would justify the cost though...

well, for instance, im asking because i want to keep my car hella sleeper, so im going to do a supersleeper exhaust, intake, and cams, and perhaps a blox intake manifold and a bigger TB..

I dont want to be ***** out racing, but after all that, i would like to tune it anyway, so im wondering if anyone has done it to a mostly stock LS...

I'd recommend against an all motor build on a B18A. Not much point to it without VTEC. The money you'd spend on that build would be better spent on a turbo, IMO (which you could still tune for 91).

again, like i said, im going super sleeper, and dont need 100's of HP.. just a nippy car.. i already have a 13 sec Mitsubishi Starion Turbo, so i dont need this boosted..

I AM, however, going to race this integra out AFTER i save up and get a new daily driver next winter.. Then i will be building a boosted b16... already have the block and everything.. but yeah

again, not looking for hella HP.. i have been in some NICE all motor B18 non-vtec engines, with a **** load of bolt ons and cams, and they are quick.. but more than i desire, and i just want to have a faster ride for the road..

so yeah.. that wasnt really answering my question.. lol

For the mods you plan to to the the engine a tune would net you a few more hp for sure, just plan on convertig from obd0 to obd1, then getting the ecu ( p28, p72, or converted p03,) and then getting it chipped and having a tuning shop tune it for you. alltogether you are looking at about 500-1000 bucks on top of the parts you intend to put on your car, all for the sake of maybe 10-15 hp. That's why they are saying to go with a mild turbo kit or just leave it alone.

i understand that.. lol.. again, boost is not an option, and i already have a boosted car..

500 bucks? i dont think so.. i can chip should be able to chip a p28 i have at my house for next to nothing, and im very handy with electronics.. i see stuff online for that all the time..

but, like i said.. this car is going full race when i get another daily driver, and even though im only getting 15 hp now, i can always use it when i boost a b16 in it next year.. i mean, suspension, poly bushings, tuning stuff, etc., will all be used, just not to their fullest extent..

again, all i was asking is if anyone has seen improvements in the stock car from tuning.. thanks though

Even on a stock car tuning can make gains, but obviously it makes more gains the more you've done. I would be surprised if a tune got you more than 5 hp, but if you tune yourself and chip yourself and are going to be using the socketed ECU and tuning hardware down the road, you could do it now, see some gains, then do it again when you're setting it up for racing.

well, like i said.. its very average for a stock focus SVT or the new civic Si's to get 12-20 hp from just tuning, because the tune is so modest for what it is..

yeah... i was just going to have it to have it for later, and keep my car sleeper, while still getting HP.. you cant tell someone has a tune from the outside.. lol.. thats my whole thing while this car is my daily.. low key
