I noticed that on my sisters civic with a d16z6 and auto tranny it will shift gears at 5000 rpm max but vtec is supposed to kick in around 5k rpm so I was wondering whats with that and also I usually shift my D15B vtec at 7000 rpm max to get the full effect of vtec but since Honda made the auto tranny switch at 5k max does that mean its bad to let the rpm's get higher than that even though redline is 7200 rpm?

 

Its rare for your to get full potential out of the car with an automatic transmission... since it controls when to shift. Just like my Corolla S, VVTI doesn't start until I believe 5k RPM as well, but with it being automatic... it shifts at 4.5k RPM.

You could run it in D3 or overdrive so that the transmission stays in 3rd gear, that way you can get it up to VTEC RPM's for it to kick in.

if your going WOT (which is the only time vtec kicks in), automatic transmissions go all the way to the redline before shifting, or atleast their suppose to

 

Manually control the auto using switches to open and close the shift solenoids. You'll probably blow it up, but who cares?

^your d15b can take sum abuse. chip the ecu and go to 7500. i had a d15b and beat the mess out of it.

 

there is no reason for vtec unless you are WOT anyways.

if you are just cruising around whats the point in revving it past 4-5k anyways?

 

d16z6 and d15b have the same redlins (7,200) but vtec is different...
the z6 crosses over at 4,800 and the d15b at 5,600, also shifting at 7k will most likely
put u a little out of the powerband if not completely out of it by a few hundred rpms.
and like the other guys said auto tranny destroy performance and they have sensors to
tell them to shift.
