Shift control solenoids on '92 need changing - what to expect
Greetings,
I'm hoping someone can give me some guidance on how a repair shop is likely to address my problem and what a ball park cost figure should be.
When my D4 light started flashing in my 92 Accord EX (approx. 120k miles), I used the excellent resources in this forum to determine (using http://techautorepairs.com/transmission.html) that there may be a problem with the shift control solenoids valve A & B (after jumping the service check connector, D4 is flashing 7, then 8). The car is quite driveable, but the shifting is clearly not right.
So that's great, except I'm an idiot when it comes to cars and I am at the complete mercy of the repair shop. I have not found one I trust since recently moving to New York City.
Is it possible and/or likely that changing the shift control solenoid will fix the problem?
If so, the assembly appears to cost $160 (hondapartscheap.com, part num. 28200-PX4-004). How many hours should it take to change?
Or is a shop likely to recommend more substantial work, e.g. a transmission overhaul? That's not cheap, but might it be a good idea?
Any guidance is much appreciated.

Thank you, cctgene. That's actually the same content available at http://techautorepairs.com/transmission.html.
Dude, if you're "an idiot when it comes to cars" then you are at the mercy of repair shops. Most are honest, just expensive. If you're "an idiot" but also adventurous, then you can follow the instructions you already found on the web and do some troubleshooting yourself and maybe make yourself proud. With this issue and the troubleshooting options outlined in the webpage you have, the worst that will happen is a tow to your mechanic. The relays themselves can be swapped out in minutes if you just want to try replacing them (but they are pretty bulletproof and not typically the source of problems in my experience).
