Going LS/VTEC? What block to use??? obd1 or obd2
I'm going LS/VTEC on my 1998 GSR and I'm wondering if the block matters. Are you able to use a OBD1 block with the OBD2 head? Didn't know if this mattered at all. I've found a OBD1 block just need to know if it will work for me before I purchase. Thanks so much for any help
they are both the same, except i think the deck height on the B18B is lower.. but they are the same.. you shouldnt have a problem with either one..
there wouldnt be a difference with the bottom end.. the only difference between OBD1 and 2 on the non vtec bottom end is the number stamped in them.. you can use either one... if it were the whole motor, head and all, THEN you would have differences.. but the bottom ends are interchangeable... If anything, the B18B bottom end with the stock pistons, would probably have more compression than the older ones, so you would probably squeeze a few more ponies from it.. it couldnt hurt.. but in a pinch, use either one..

either way, it WILL NOT make a difference.. if you want to use one, bolt one up.. lol
yeah, the obd1 and obd2 block are both b18b, you can use either one, i'd just go for whichever you can find with less miles and in better condition
any ls is actully good turbo motor's and dont for get to change out the windage tray and put a girdel on if your going to be reving the **** out of it
The only reason I could see you wanting an OBDII block is that it has the crank sensor on it. That way you could put you OBDII ecu back in witout throwing a code! Now that's only if getting an inspection sticker is a problem for you.
can someone fill me in what obd1 and 2 are, i know they are blocks but which?
i was thinking in going ls/v on my b18b and keep the block and just buying a lsv head?
what exactly will i need and can you ballpark a price range.

And its for emissions, and has nothing to do with performance.. if you hook it up wrong, then you can have issues, but its not really a "you NEED TO HAVE THIS" type thing..
Thanks for all the info people. Great feedback. I found a OBD1 motor that im interested in, but I read the one post about the crank sensor for inspection reasons. I'm turboed at the moment and was hoping to get it inspected at somepoint down the road??? so do I only go for the OBD2 for this reason, no way around the crank sensor issue? Thanks again HT
I think evans-tuning has some "methods" on how to make your OBDII ecu read correctly without all the sensors. Why are you doing the LS/Vtec if you already have a GSR? And you'll need an OBDII ecu to pass inspection and I'm assuming you are running OBDI at the moment since you're turbo.

yeah the best bet for not getting ****ed with by cops is going bar'd stock ls, then going ls vtec, you'll still never be able to do legal smog though
