Code 45 update
Hi all.
I wrote a post in here about a week ago describing how my Civic (d16) is running rich and throwing a code 45. I did some diagnosis and I have narrowed it down to a couple of things that I think may be the problems, and I'd love to hear some opinions from any qualified people.
So, I found that if I pinch off the tube leading to the evap canister, the engine runs better. Pretty much runs normal, actually. So, I'm wondering if a faulty evap canister can cause the car to suck in extra gas from the fuel tank, or if that is just too far away.
The other thing I've noticed is that, if I suck on the tube leading to my fuel pressure regulator, it doesn't seem to hold vacuum (at least not for long) and I get a little bit of fumes coming out. I've been under the impression that this should be sealed up pretty tight, but I don't know if there's a limit here.
Aside from that, there is one more thing strange going on with the car that I'm not sure is related to the rich condition (but it probably is). If I hold the RPM to about 2k in neutral, every few seconds it will cut off and go down to about 800, then back to 2k. The idle has been high, but it's usually constant. Only around 2k does this happen. Input would be appreciated, though I have a hunch that fixing the rich condition will fix that as well.

to answer both your questions, i just see d16 not sure of the year, but on the obd1 cars, there is a switching valve between the intake and the canister. so if it is leaking past the switching valve that could be an issue. and yes the fuel pressure regulator should hold vacuum, and not leak.
the evap line thing you are talkin about is probably a stuck open purge solenoid, it's a little sensor looking thing that goes on top of the canister with two wires going to it, should be normally closed there should be two rubber lines going to it blow into one and air shouldnt come out, you could try cleaning it or just replacing it, ar for the pressure regulator, if you see fumes coming out the diaphragm is leaking just replace it
Thank you. Sorry, I forgot the year there. It's a 99 Civic Ex.
I have some family things to take care of this week, but I should be able to check that out over the weekend and I'll put up another update.
