Damn, thats dirty. I don't know if carb or brake cleaner will hurt it but I'd use some clean towel and get as much as possible off first.

i wonder if it will hurt if the gunk falls back into the fuel chamber on the head.

Use carb cleaner, but that gunk doesn't affect anything. Your fuel spray comes out of the tip and yours appear to be squeaky clean.

he isnt talking about the EGR...the gunk looks worse than mine when i did this..do what you can to remove most of it then spray throttle body carb cleaner in there for the rest to get removed..the injectors clean with the carb cleaner too..
it helped my mpg for a little while..but now its going back down again, im going to check it one of these days

just a follow up...i installed my fuel injectors in as well as the rail and after that there was fuel spraying where the injector's butt goes into the rail on the 4th cylinder. the remedy to this was the o-ring, which COSTS $6 F!@#&*^% for the tiny *** ring!

anyways, use motor/atf oil to lube those little rings on the injector. when i took mine o-ring out, it was ripped so that's why the fuel leaked out.
