So far I'm getting estimates for $160 + just for the cat.. and it's not even direct fit. With labor it's easily over $200, which I don't have. Dmv screwed me over with the time line so I don't think trying to find a good (used) cat would be the best idea right now.. I found some cheaper cats ($60sh) but I'm not sure if they are Cali legal.

It's a 89 crx hf (d15b6). It has to be CALI legal too.

Only ones I found CA legal were $160 and up and then shipping on top of that.

i posted a CARB approved list for the 3 way cats, but i think it's listing for 1996-2000 civics. I bought a direct fit magnaflow cat from summitracing.com and had zero issues with smog. i think you'll be ok if you have to go that route.

do your research it needs to have a certain number on it go to magnaflow.com they break it down for you. A cali cat is not the same as other states over here in LA you can get cat plus install for about $150-200

I've never seen a smog tech look that much into a cat.

Magnaflow is not really helpful at all. From their website:

1989 1.5L; Exc. HF UNIVERSAL CATALYTIC CONVERTER 36304 $401.61
1989 1.5L; Exc. HF DIRECT FIT CATALYTIC CONVERTER 36635 $536.68

Why would I pay more then OEM.. lol..

I really need help though. Can anybody help me find a decent deal on a cali legal cat?
I'm running into so many that are not legal to commie land requirements.

Where are you getting the car smog checked???? Like I stated before, I have never seen a tech go farther than glancing under the car to check for a cat before he ran the test. Go to a muffler shop and stop mentioning "cali legal." Just ask them for the price of a cat and installation and be done with it.

Where is your cat on your exhaust system? My HF has it right below the exhaust manifold. I don't think those will even fit.. my cat seems very very small.

Oh crap, total brain fart. You're right. the good thing is that you can unbolt it. I guess those $160 are your best option. swap it out yourself and call it a day

That's the problem man.. all the retail stores I been at have only cats that fit underneath the car. Kinda like mid-pipes. I was thinking of hollowing out my original cat and welding on a cat underneath the car.

Or opt for the OEM ebay link above... but damn... 230 bux...

Screw it, try the ghetto way. Drive it around for a while before you get it tested so that the cat is nice and hot

that will not work if the cat is blown. and if you gut the stocker and place a cat after it you will most likely get turned away at the smog shop.

Didn't think of it that way. Is 2000+ civic cat in the same place? Because I know the visual part of the smog requires the cat to be in the same spot.

I smashed on the car for 2 hrs before the smog. Also ran Isoheet but it barely helped.

due to the new CA regs-there is a SHORT list of legal cats for use on CA cars. not a single one of those is a bolt-in for the HF model CRX. you have 2 choices

-bust out the ceramic on your OEM and weld in a new cat somewhere under the car.

-get your best bud in another state to order you the correct bolt-on cat from an online dealer(they cant legally ship to CA now) and then have him mail it to you.

expect to pay $350-550 for the correct OEM botl-on.

I bought an aftermarket supposedly bolton cat for HF and it turned out to NOT fit and of such poor construction and the heat sheilds wouldnt bolt on. PITA and noisy too.

email me directly through profile for list of dealers with online cheap sales.
