My first attempt at a "REAL" Paint job..
Ok so I started off with the hood, I will do the hood, front bumper, and fenders seperately to save a little hassle of running all around the whole car.. Heres how the hood came out. This was my first time using a sprayer and automotive paint (not spray paint lol) I have always been able to pull out a decent looking paint job with rattle cans but I felt its time to move on and begin learning how to really paint
Its a mettalic hugger orange, the whole car will be painted this color including the engine bay and the interior. Check out my build thread if you'd like..
sanded down ready to go:

Me, looks like im struggling lol

The results:

Hugger Orange with a Mettalic mid coat
Looks pretty good man...Did you have any problems with dust in the garage? Is it single stage or base/ clear?
I would seriously suggest getting a respirator, not just a face mask. Those things aren't worth a darn for fumes. Auto paint can make you seriously sick.

It was 4 stage because I added the mettalic, It went primer, base, mettalic clear, then clear.. The dust in the garage ****ed with me a little but I tried to avoid it the best I could.. which is why I wet sanded after almost every stage
Ill be painting the back half of the car outside so im not sure how im going to try and keep it as free from dust as possible, wish I could at least put it in the garage but theres just not enough room

I have a QUESTION for all the proffesional painters out there! What do you suggest as the best way to buff and polish the paint afterwards? What kind of material and what brand of polish etc..

farecla makes good products.
i used their products only a handful of times but i had really nice results.
after the clearcoat went on, i wet sanded the car with 1500 grit just enough to break down some of the orange peel. after that i went at it with farecla's "G3 Regular grade paste compound" then "G10 extra fine grade compound".
you should be able to pick up a good respirator from a local autobody supplier if you have any near you. or you can check some out online:

nobody should be breathing in those paint fumes. you better believe that stuff will cause cancer.

I will be buying a respirator tomorrow because those fumes are horrible and make me feel a little "out of it" if you will and I want to start painting more often and maybe get into it as a side job in the future. Anyone wanna donate me some practice!?
i very like that color! look forward to what you u have next. once ur car look clean it will get around and more ppl will want u to paint theirs. so it be a good side job and practice. KEEP it up YO
I know dude, I didnt feel to well after but when I did some practice runs on my fenders the night before I had nothing on and the garage closed I was basically caughing out paint all night, the mask worked much better than nothing, who sells respirators? I use to have to wear one when i was welding for taylor-dunn last year but I threw it away wish I kept it..

or buy them at http://autobodydepot.com/ for mad cheap

to combat dust, you should be using tack cloths. They are pretty cheap, just a couple bucks a box, tack after each layer flashes off. Use latex gloves of course. Also, if you wear a painters suit, that'll keep dust from coming off you and onto the paint. throw up some plastic paint sheeting around you to keep dust away, put up a tent/canopy that'll help. There are a bunch of ways to keep dust off.
And then of course, sanding and buffing the clear, that works really.
You may want to do more than just 2 coats of clear if you're going to wetsand also. Maybe somewhere along the lines of 3-5, depending on how flat you're trying to get it while sanding. Glad to hear you're getting the respirator, haha!
