Failed Emissions with my b16a swap.... help me pass
So, I have a obd0 b16a swap in my 91 crx si with a PR3 ecu. Everything is stock...header, intake, exhaust, cat....everything. I took my car to emissions (Maryland) and the cat and gas cap passed but my hydro-carbons were 290 and I failed because they were supposed to be at 200. How do/ can I lower my hydro carbons? Thanks in advance for ideas and help
check your ignition timing, spark plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, PCV valve, O2 sensors or worst case you may need a new cat. Make sure to take the test with a hot catalytic converter after driving for a while.
Well, I have new spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor....I rushed to the emissions place and drove no more than 20 minutes though
Yea I definitely think that I have to drive a while longer before I go next time. I did however do an oil change and put 93 octane in it the day before...
I failed recently for HC myself. If you search you will find out that high HC are caused by incomplete combustion thus checking timing, spark plugs, wires and dizzy as well as leaky vacuum hoses, is crucial, well I had done all that and it still failed. My problem was a leaky injector seals or TB gasket. After I replaced that my HC dropped by 50%! Check hoses!

you can take it to any regular smog check and pass the smog test with proper tune up and maintenance depending on if the smog tech actually wants to smog it and hope that you dont get popped by the 5-0...on the other hand a jdm b16a was never offered in a 88-91 civic/crx USDM vehicle and therefore doesn't qualify as a legal replacement motor and would never pass a state bar check...your best bet is to get a USDM b16 motor newer than your vehicle and bar it if you want it to be bueno...!!!
if you want a clean b16a2 USDM motor hit up Lunalink because he is selling his and he is located in south central...!!!
Could lean it out a little, would definitely help.... and definitely drive it around for a bit before you head over there.
this is my buddy whos car is failing emissions.. in maryland they dont give a **** what kind of motor you got in your car or if its a "legal" replacement or any of that bs.. all maryland cares is that it passes the emissions specs.. what do you guys think about this.. the a-hole, we call him ghetto garrett, who helped my buddy do the swap only ran one 02 sensor.. and supposibly pinned it into the ecu.. anywho, its right before the cat.. but im under the impression that there should be 2 and they should be right on the exhaust manifold.. yes or no.. also my question is will this make it run rich and or make the hydrocarbon reading higher? what do you guys think about throwing a fpr on it and dialing it down to lean it out?
pr3 ecu had different emision specs than the us spec p30's. I would make sure the swap is wired correctly. No codes, the 2 o2's, knock vtec, and pressure hooked up correctly. I would bump ignition timming up to 18 degrees, and make sure your tps is set properly. make sure all the evap stuff is hooked up right, pcv etc... But it also depends on the cat, how old it is, and what motor it was meant for.. If you have a 20 year old cat that might be the big issue.... Fixing the the above issues will definetly help. The single wire o2's take a few minutes to heat up, but if they are not working right you wont allways get a code.
Good luck....
Good luck....
HC are unbured fuel - the higher the octaine level the slower the fuel will burn so 93 not good to reduce HC levels - . what where your othe reading's CO NOx CO2 i used to be a canadian emmsions repair tech so i don't know all the usa rules and regs but that high of level is usally a bad O2 sensor or Cat but a friends b16a had a bad tps sensor that caused ecu to think it was a wide open throttle when it wasn't good luck feel free to ask more ???
Add some Ethanol. If you can find where they sell E85 you can add a gallon. The second time you fill up add 2 gallons. I read that my Acura TL can run as high as 33% without setting off the O2 sensor. I run around 30% and my vehicle runs great, plus at 30% I am at 94 octane.
I have a simple formula. 85 (one gallon of E85) + 40 (4 gallons of E10) = 125 then divide by 5 (the number of gallons of total fuel). 125/5 = 25% ethanol. This will give you 93 octane too.
My acura TL is suppose to get 17 city and 27 highway and I have gotten as high as 35.98 mpg on the highway when I hypermile.

Just took my 91 EF in to get tested for the first time today and it failed the NOx. Running at 1700ppm, max allowed ~1100ppm. From what I've read so far I'm probably running too lean. It has an after market intake (cone) and a custom header. Stock muffler and stock cat. I'm thinking that the intake is causing it to run lean, but I'm not sure how to fix it. Any suggestions? I'm going to pull out a plug to see if the engine is running hot to see if it is running lean, I'm also going to try to pull the O2 sensor and see if it looks damaged at all.
Any other thoughts?

can't an older cat cause higher levels of HC? Some pores inside may be slightly clogged..just sayin.
If you need a fuel controller I have an older Field fuel controller that I am willing to let go of $40 bux shipped.
