set it at 0 don't adjust it. cam gears are point less on a d-series cause you can't change the overlap. basically if you make the intake open sooner well you just made the exhaust close sooner and vice versa so it doesn't do anything but hurt power. you loose about 3 hp if you advance it one degree and you loose 3 hp if you retard it one degree. leave it at 0 the only reason to run one is you are running k-pro and you need the one with the different cam trigger marks

to be on the save side just r run 2% on R or A. retard is for high end power and avendance is for low and mind in power. anytime you putting new cam or old cams in just reset your value other then that you should be fine. oh remember also if you want higher then 2% on R or A, if so you have stock value it going to tap. hope you get what i mean by this.

OP, you must tune it on a dyno. The "ideal" setting is 0 degrees. Otherwise, they would manufacture the cam differently. You adjust to correct for the tolerances.

This man speaks the truth, kpro would be the most legitimate reason to run one of these things on a d17, which beats the purpose of the adjustable cam gear...Just run your stock one to make sure it's in 0 the whole time, as these things tend to slip and change timing when not installed properly.

first things first, sounds like the OP needs to not install that thing, lol.

but, anyway, an adjustable sprocket on a sohc can effectively change the powerband. yes, you can't dial in/out overlap, but you can effectively degree a cam, and also in combination with tuning optimize the powerband range for your particular setup. if it's a shorter stroke setup with a lightweight valvetrain, OE rods (light) and cast pistons (light), you'd probably want to explore what retarding the cam will do because you will be able to realistically see more revs than your normal longer stroke d (like a d16 or d17).

FWIW, i ran a 3 bolt STR gear for 6 years on my old sohc, and then for the following 4 years upgraded to a 5 bolt aem gear because it was indexed properly for the y7/y8 vs. the STR. neither ever slipped on two built engines with over 200k combined.

LoL thanks! i would hope so I have gone further than anyone else with N/A on the D17.

Oh @ razor tr I hope you have something to control that cam you say stage 2 so my guess is it is the N/A stage to which is really just a straight 3/4 race cam. the only way to get it to idle straight is with k-pro
