What Gas for welding stainless wit a Mig
What kind of gas do I need to weld stainless with a MIG? I am just starting to weld stainless and a tig is outta my price range right now. Do I need the Tri gas?
I would go with trimix personally unless you intend on spray transfer welding thicker stock(which i doubt) https://honda-tech.com/forums/welding-fabrication-53/post-your-mig-stainless-steel-ss-welds-2689060/
I would go with .024 or .030 308 wire with trimix and you should be set. It takes some pratice to run since its not as forgiving as er70 on MS. You'll get the hang of it though. Have fun!
Not sure if it's "correct" but I run straight argon on my MIG with 309 wire. My MIG tank doubles as my purge tank, and since we rarely use the MIG I use argon because it's my purge gas.
Our millermatic 251 welds like crap with just straight argon. It works ok with tri-mix and 308 though. I've heard people have had good succcess with spool guns, 308 and straight argon though.

I'm not a great MIG welder, but I find with my setup on both carbon and stainless that it works pretty well if you keep the torch close and have the settings dialed in right. There's little to no spatter compared to what I've seen with regular trimix or whatever, just kinda tough on our little SP135 to get the settings good.
