Oxygen/Acetylene Tanks EXPLOSION!
I saw this on another forum:
Apparently the tanks had to be leaking while sitting in the van. When someone used the keyless entry remote to unlock the doors, the van exploded. Luckily no one was injured.

my dads good friend, a guy died at his scrap yard.. They had the very large oxy/actely torches, and they exploded, one man died and the other had very serious injuries of the shrapnel implanted in him. A year or so back at another yard (guys brother) the son was running the large scrap handleing machine and I guess they use it to move around the bottles in their cart (again very large bottles), and he squeezed to hard, they exploded and caused a massive fire that could be seen for miles, lucky no one was hurt.
It just goes to show how unstable acetelyne is, in our electrical code for hazardous area's it has its own classification everything must be intrinsically safe, its one of the most if not the most unstable gas. Extremely dangerous.

thats why you should never transport tanks in a inclosed vehicle open air trans port also just imagine if your garage was full and you walked out and turned on the light and ka boom O
The other day my boss cranked the pressure passed 30psi... My life flashed before my eyes...
I saw this on another forum to. I bet he'll be investing in the highest quality remote starts from now on.

We have a few sets of cutting torches and inspect them everyday just for those reasons. If you keep your equipment in check accidents are less likely to happen. It is amazing the power of those chemicals.
amazing no one was hurt badly... i imagine somebody had some busted ear drums.. i have played with acetylene bombs before (2liter bottles filled with a gas mixture and a fuse) and that **** alone is loud! i cant imagine the sound that came from those 2 tanks exploding!
The state hazardous material/storage fee for these type of cylinders (at least in Oregon through our wonderful state fire Marshall / state police) makes it nearly nonviable to have these types of gases anymore. I think we pay $800 a year fee for all the argon cylinders (30 250 privates) and I think he said it would cost us about another $1000 a year for our small set of the oxy/acetyl tanks (we got rid of ours when he told me that). I guess you can see why from the pics.
I go to welding school and I swear half of the kids are morons, I always catch them cutting metal not worrying about moving a barrier over to keep the sparks off the tanks, Im like what the **** are you doing? and they just look at me with no idea what I'm talking about. even better when they are cutting metal with the hoses right under what they are cutting getting covered in sparks
Oxygen/Acetylene is no joke. amazing how many people use these things on a daily basis and not think twice about the dangers of using gasses.
we once made a 4"id 14ft exhaust tube cannon with an oil filter as our projectile, and used oxy/acetylene as our main source of combustion, aimed it at a city bill board and blew a 10 inch hole through both billboards. front and back. we were about 50yards from the sign. i have since gave my torch up for a plasma lol

I use oxy/acetylene all day, every day at work. While this type of explosion does demonstrate the HUGE power of the gasses, it is not just acetylene that is this dangerous. oxy/propane is arguably even more dangerous in an enclosed area, as is oxy/hydrogen. Any flammable gas, mixed with oxygen can be a BIG bomb.
BTW, people have even blown up their houses using "bug bombs", from the propellant alone igniting, NO oxygen.
Very impressive display of power in this thread.

We have a 10'x10' shack where we keep all our bottles, like 40 in all. About two years ago I was working outside the shop, and a work crew down the road(100ft away) at Enbridge was doing digging around a natural gas line. They hit it with the backhoe and a 40ft geyser of gas came shooting out. Good thing it didnt ignite or this whole town could just kiss their *** goodbye. Nonetheless it was a pretty awe inspiring sight, and it scared the crap outta me.
