possible blown head gasket
Hi fellow members,
I have a neighbor who has an Accord LX, I believe it's a 91 model. He told me today his brother took it to some mechanic and he told him that it was a possible head gasket and he would have to send something to another shop and have them check to make sure the cylinders or round, My neighbor knows nothing about cars except how to drive one and put gas in one. From what he was saying sounded like this mechanic is saying that he would have to send the whole engine or the block out to check the cylinders. I really am not sure what he is talking about but I thought I would put it out here and see if someone could help.
What damage could happen to a accord's engine if it blows a head gasket ?
What is involved, how deep and what parts would need attention when replacing the head gasket? I would appreciate any and all input.
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT!
Sincerely

With a blown head gasket you can loose your antifreeze and sieze up the entire engine when it over heats.
I think labor is around 6 hours plus time to take the head to a machine shop and have it check for warpage and for cracks in saddles between the valves. While your at it, replace the trimming belt if its reached 100kmiles and new tensioner and water pump.
Best to park the car and then have it done or, tow it to a shop. Dont risk driving it then cooking the entire engine.

It blows out white smoke which means the HG doesn't seal as good anymore. So coolant goes into the combustion chambers and burn it out; thus, white smoke.
What the mechanic is probably talking about is the cylinder head. If the car seriously over heated due to the blown head gasket there is always the chance that the head could be warped or have cracks. If that ‘s the case then just replacing the gasket won’t fix the problem. You’ll either have to get another head or get the one you have fixed. It is not necessary to remove the motor to remove the head.
You can look for some of these symptoms loss of coolant, white smoke coming out of the tail pipe, the smell of coolant coming out the tail pipe, and a milkshake looking oil cap. Other than that you can go down to autozone and rent a compression gauge or just buy one they are cheap and very good to have. Use it to check compression and you can see your self if it has a blown head gasket. If it does I had a friend who used that head gasket fix from bars leak in your coolant the new stuff that just came out. It will not save you but it can buy you some time. It help last his car an extra 6 months before it blew through the stuff and that was enough time he had to save for a low mileage engine. So you can give it a shot if you want to try it.
