Default Will Honda still cover a 2001 Accord Auto Tranny?

Hello,
I have a friend who has a 2001 Accord V6 with the Auto Tranny. This is the model that received the extended warranty due to problems.
The tranny just gave out. He has a little over 100,000 miles.
He purchased the car from his Mother who was the original owner. She claims she never received the waranty notice.
The dealer told him $4,000 since he was out of warranty. He called American Honda and they are looking into his case now.
His immediate family has purchased five Hondas new from the same dealership over the past four years.
Does anybody have any idea if Honda would be likely to offer him anything towards the repair?
Does anybody have any suggestions about the best way to handle this situation? $4,000 for a nine year old car might not be worth it.
Any ideas would be helpful.
Have a great day!

Thank You,

Mike
