Default H22A4 Vs H22A1

Whats the difference between these two engines i know that the A1 is 190HP and the A4 is 200. What did they do to increse the HP?? and will the H22A4 fit in a 1992 SI??

H22A1 = Closed deck, stronger for boosting...

H22A4 = Open Deck.

The A4's ranged from 195 - 200 Hp (I think), partly in thanks to a different crank with the newer ones, and an exhaust change.

And yes an H22A4 will go in a 92 Si, but an A1 is going to be a little easier.

i dont think they had a different crank. the difference in hp was from the header and intake system. the a4 is obd II, so some electrical things are different. the a1 is better in my opion.

btw- i have one for sale (a1), ill offer it w/a choice of heads, one needs valves, one needs nothing. make me an offer and its yours. link below

Cool. Thanx for your help. Ok now here's another question. I'm getting the engine minus tranny and ECU for 1100 CAD do u think i can use my H23 tranny and what ECU can i get and how much do they cost. I heard something about a GSR ECU. But for sure i wan't and ODB I ecu cause i heard that the ODBII tunes out the mods.

h23 tranny will not hold up for long on the h22, and on the ecu, p13 or p72 are your best bets. you can use any VTEC ecu but you will loose some of the features these have, such as knock sensor and the use of the dual runners on your intake mani.

The H23 tranny is fine. It bolts right up. The only issue is that the gearing is considerably taller than the H22A trannies - so acceleration will suffer.

Sorry that's an old wives tale: http://www.preludeonline.com/showthr...threadid=47641

My buddy Keith compared the headers from the two years, they are exactly the same. The pics aren't up anymore but trust me they changes nothing but their marketing materials. You couldn't have your Top Honda sports car getting outdone in HP by the Accord which came out with 200hp that year as well

Why did Honda open the deck ?

Just wondering if ya don't mind explaining what closed deck and open deck actually means and describing it visually if possible...mainly want to know about closed deck though, if you don't want to explain both! thanks!

in an open deck engine the area all the way around the cylinder sleve is a water passage, in a close deck engine there are small passages for the wather to cool the engine. opne deck cools better. also a difference between teh two is that a4's use a floating wrist pin system so they are quieter, i also think this helps prevent a possible piston slap condition in the future by making cold starts a little less abrasive. and the h23 tranny will work fine under a h22, i have had mine on there for 6 months now.

Not entirely correct - 96 was an A1 w/ OBD II - just to complicate matters.

It's soooo much easier to understand open vs. closed deck by just seeing a picture. You'll get it in 2 seconds flat.

So just wanted to know why is the closed deck better for boosting...is it just because in the closed deck there is more material between the sleeve and the block...just making it more solid??? pls explain,thanks!
