I'd say swap in a d16z6 or y8 (sohc vtec), or b16a. If you want later on you can turbo the sohc. B16a go with some sort of suspension setup i/h/e cams stuff like that.
Its sort of a general question. What are your goals?

But she wants to keep the automatic so wouldn't the D16Z6 be the best for her???
theres no point to doing an auto engine swap in a civic. you'll have lots of headaches along the way, spend lots of money, and when your done your car will still be slow.
if you want a fast honda dont get an auto

I would go with a B16A and convert it to a stick. My girl had a auto 4dr ex, know it has a manual and a B16a. She paid $3100 with the manual trans. convertion. It is 4 sale on this site.
