Default Rough Idle & Hesitation on Startup (Cold or Warm!!)

I've got a 94 Accord w/ 73k miles on it. It's been running fine other than this problem that has started lately and is progressively getting worse. I've searched around to no avail as most hesitation/rough idle issues on start occur only when the motor is cold. I can drive 50 miles, shut the car off for a minute to go into the gas station, start it up and the problem resurfaces.
  • VERY rough idle at startup, warm or cold.
  • Hesitation
  • Stalls if I don't give it gas
  • The problem will go away as soon as I go ~50ft., getting the RPMs above 2.5-3k or so.

Any ideas? I haven't tinkered with it and really don't know where to start. I was thinking about cleaning the EGR valve.

Also, the check engine indicator is on and to my disappointment autozone/advanced only check out vehicles '96 & newer. Could you guys point me to an inexpensive code reader?

Vehicle again is a '94 Accord LX, 2.2 non-vtec.

My roommate said something about this but I don't think it will work on my vehicle. I don't have a "Check Engine" Light, I've got a rotating dial, similar to the mileage readout, that rolls over to red. Will it still work?

That is a maintenance reminder that turns to red every 7,500 miles after your reset it. To reset that, you use your car key to push the black plastic indentation on the instrument gauge. It's shown in the owner's manual. As long as you maintain the car such as changing oil, air filter, etc. regularly, you don't need to worry about that maintenance reminder and can reset it.
