Default neutral at high speeds

I just took my car around the block and hopped on the freeway for a lil joy ride. When i hit about 90-100 i just put it in neutral and then i started to smell like my clutch was being burnt.

I dont really do it that much. I just wanted to slow down without putting pressure on my brakes.

Can any tell me if i was doing serious harm to my clutch/tranny?

When you are in neutral there is no damage being done to your clutch or tranny, because you are not in gear.

I usually shift into neutral and then brake when I want to come to a stop, so I have no idea why you would be smelling clutch.

Mechanically it's not bad. But from a defensive driving scenario, there are lots of things that could be bad about it.

you'd have an easier time slowing down with the car in gear
