ford focus exhaust on b16 swap??
ok the b16 swap in my ef wont pass emissions testing here in indiana. still reads high on hc and co2...like 12 pts over standard. well theyre testing it like it still has the 1.5 dx motor i pulled out not the b16 obviously. i spoke with the repair tech and he said maybe if i can get the cat as close to the header as possible and get it hot..reall hot thatll solve the problem.
well if youve ever seen the 2.0 l focus engine it has the cat mounted as part of the downpipe..close as hell to the exhaust mani...i was thinkin...im pretty good at welding and fabbin **** up soo think this might actually work?
maybe cut and weld an oem b series mani or even try a focus mani?

back in 2006, i passed illinois emission here in chicago, here's what i did: stock 89' dx exhaust including cat, stock b16 header, non-vtec ecu like pm6 or pr4, ignition timing and tune up done, with everything done i barely make it, like 0.039 ppm my car 0.036ppm
HC = Unburnt fuel. You need to figure out how to lean your car out a tad. You could always advance the timing just a hair for the test, or do a tune-up.

Well, your motor must run shitty as hell because ALL FOUR of my B-Series swapped EF's passed emissions with out a hitch. All of them are modified and two of them being turbo. Lake and Porter Counties both have the same standards because of the Steel Mills and being the "Crossroads of America". Yes, they obviously test it for the car it is in and you can't do anything about it.
Oh and by the way, our two counties are now the only two in the state that still does it. The two down by Louisville no longer require it... isn't that some garbage?
The people at the test sites are complete idiots. The referee's are just as bad. Lake and Porter also lowered their test limits from 5 down to 4. So use them wisely. Maybe so people can better help you, why don't you post up your test results? Instead of letting people speculate what they may or may not be.

some ppl have told me its cause of the p&p gsr head im using. i dunno...
im running an unchipped p30 ecu. ive leaned out the fuel press as much as i could. advanced timing a bit. everythings new. cat.. plugs... wires...havent driven it at all really since i cant get plates! been just sittin in the garage while i work on gettin it to pass. doesnt help the a holes at the test site cant drive stickshifts to save their life..old *** dood drivin my **** like its an old *** f 150 or somethin...bahhhh anyway heres the test

HOLY CRAP!!! WTF Lake county has lower standards than Porter county... They both have mills and high traffic volume. In Porter County the limits are...
HC = 0.80
CO = 15.00
NOx = 2.50
What was your nitrogen level? (even if you did pass it helps see what is going on)
Your ported head has nothing to do with it. If anything it helps the combustion process. How many times have you went and tested it? The drivers at those places are horrible with sticks. They do make you fail because they can't drive for ****. If you look at the graph it will directly reflect where you failed at all shift points.
To clear some things up... When you lean it out too much or when you advance the timing it raises exhaust temperature. This can have effects that make you fail as well. I will get more into it when I am not on my iPhone.
In all honesty I would drain your tank and run a couple gallons of E-85. I would put everything back to stock settings other than maybe putting one step hotter plugs in it... It just depends, as I am not there to see how exactly it is running. You can say what you want but it should work judging by your numbers. I have helped all sorts (domestic and imports alike) pass gay-*** emissions testing this way. Yes, your fuel system will be fine; I like to either drain the tank afterwards or at least fill it back up with gas after you get it tested.
Dang my thumbs hurt...

e85? well ive tested it 4 times...and yea you can see the spikes in the graph where they over revved the engine..gayyy..im on my last one so somethings gotta work. i keep getting the suggestion to run denatured alcohol which scares the hell outta me putting that in my fuel tank..
BTW "denatured" just means it has a small amount of something added to make it undrinkable, since otherwise it would basically be 200-proof booze...denaturing it makes it legal to sell anywhere, exempt from alcohol taxes, etc.
so which should i use maybe..e85 or alcohol? im still gonna try an exhaust setup with the cat closer to the header. or maybe i wouldnt even need to running the e85 since it cuts down the hc already
so wait, you can't even just roll up to a test place and ask for a free test? man here in oregon we can roll up any time we want to get a free test. only have to pay when we need to get tags.
sorry i can't be more helpful, never had a non pass. but yeah i was told to run denatured alcohol, if i didn't, HOWEVER i was told to be careful because it supposedly eats up rubber fuel lines, which is no good

To the OP:
If you do what I say then you should pass...
I don't understand why the emission test is varying from Lake to Porter County??? You only have 4 times to test in PC and after that they require you to go to a ref... Either way when you go to a ref you are REQUIRED to take it to a shop on their list to have the repairs done. Be prepared for some major money to be spent.
my b16 failed as well.. ALOT of b16's dont pass smog.. i read in honda tuner a few years back, that about 1/3 b16's (that arent rebuilt), dont pass smog, at least in cali... we are a green state, and they dont like high HC or NOX.. lol...
an no.. the ford focus headers wont help, as you cannot get it to fit on there...
but yeah... +1 for the HC being unburned fuel.. HC = Hydrocarbons = Gas... lean it out, check your ignition timing, and make sure your spark is running strong, i.e. new plugs, timing is right, etc

well..i wasnt gonna slap on ford exhaust..just mock up my own exhaust setup using the same idea. like modding a stock b16 exhast mani and welding a cat sooper close to the head.

No, the tests are free right now. They plan on charging for them in the future. Somewhere around $25-$45 per test. This is ludicrous because you are REQUIRED to take the test and still pay taxes to fund it. Then they are going to double dip and essentially charge you twice. It is just the corrupt Indiana government that is trying to push everyone to buy new cars. The standard for HC went from 1.20 to .80 last year. That is almost cut in half for what you have to pass. Also, they act like the wind does not blow to any other counties. Also, the biggest city in Indiana with the most people does not have emissions. I could go on for days about this garbage. This is why I moved out of NWI...

i will do the e85 suggestion. if all else fails..ill just swap the damn vin tag from my 90 si! it has a sohc and passed no problem haha
yeah the crx hf, and i believe 88-89 std's (i know my 88 std had it) had en exhaust similar to the focus one you're speaking of now.
i believe that perhaps the civic vx had this same set up? not certain
i know that the non ex/si ek's had manifolds like that too.
you could use something like this, and mod it to fit your car if you had a b series flange

hmmm never knew that one...im an ef man. dont really tinker much with 96 and up. thats pretty much is the exact thing im goin for. maybe i can find a stock b series mani and hack the flange off. gotta be someone wanting to get rid of some oem exhaust shizz
