Default d16y8 turbo

Hey guys, I just built a d16y8 turbo for my buddy and am having some consistant gremlins. Here's what I got; The car is running a hf manifold with an adapter plate, and a mitsu 14b turbo, internally wastegated to 8 lbs. I'm running a -3an feed and a -8 drain line with a 90 degree bend right off the turbo. Additionally, we are running a chipped p28 ecu running chrome tuned for 8 lbs. with 450cc injectors. Lastly, we are just running a basic mitsu dsm 1g bov. Here's the problem. I just put a fresh d16y8 in the car with only 20,000 miles, motor has great compression and runs flawlessly. However, the car has now been through two turbos and I cannot figure out why. At first it started to burn oil while boosting and under a pretty heavy load, now, it is burning oil all the time even while sitting at an idle. The motor however is still in great mechanical condition and I am certain it's the turbo. My question what could the reason be for pushing the seals on these turbos?

-My thoughts are that the drain line is sufficiently draining
-The turbo might have debris in it, as he chose not to run a filter

Besides that I'm drawing a blank. Any help would be appreciated. Here are some pictures of the set up to use as a referance.

i dont think that your oil return is adequate enough. is it burning oil or is the oil passing the seals? you may need to step up to a -10.

The biggest problem with running those manifolds, is how low the turbo hangs. I would run a 45 off the turbo, giving the line a better chance at draining. Also, you may want to run a breather setup, or i use to just run the black box on the back, and some tubing into it, minus the check valve and leave it up high near the firewall. I never had any oil out of it, but i know a lot of people like to run breather boxes or bottles just in case. My thoughts are that the drain is not easily flowing into the pan, and you have too much pressure.

I use to run a very similair setup, and i put a clear tube on the drain so i could see what was going on. Sure enough it would back right up, if i pulled the dipstick out, it would lower down quite a bit. Also, you might need to run a restrictor at the turbo. I made my own, but you can buy them easily also.

how can you tell the difference? i would assume its passing the seals becuase it only burns substantial oil while boosting.

And yes, the turbo does hang rediculously low, in fact that was one of my first thoughts were that it was too low and that there just wasn't enough gravity to drain the oil out of the turbo.

Also, a breather would be a great addition to the setup. What are the ramifications of having too much oil enter the combustion chamber due to oil not draining?

IMO, it looks like your oil drain is bottoming out and not flowing enough oil back into the pan, which in turn is backing up oil into the turbo and blowing the seals causing the constant smoking.

yeah, that's what I was thinking. Looks like it's time for a new manifold to sit that turbo up a little higher.
