1G CRV question about intermittent rear wipers

Hi CRV owners,
Am normally a Civic-type (see DIYs) but was poking around the 1G CRV Service manual and spotted the circuit diagram for the rear wiper. It indicates that the 98+ CRVs have an intermittent function on the rear wiper built in to the ICU behind the fuse box. This is different from the 97 version, where the wires pass through an external box mounted behind the dash at centre.
Some questions: 1. What does this box do, if anything? Do the 97's have intermittent wipers due to this box? 2. Do any 1G CRVs have variable intermittent rear wipers? Or, is the intermittent function always on at a set rate? Can the rear intermittent wiper function be turned off?
Thanks all!
