about to buy ef sedan
hey guys im about to buy my first honda which is an 88 ef sedan. all it needs is piston rings and i heard you can change the rings without pullin the motor. is this true? any help would be great. thanks in advance.
pull the oil pan, remove oil pump, removing piston connecting rods from the crank shaft.
im pretty sure you have to remove the crank shaft as well. but like i said you dont "need" to pull out the motor for this one, but you WILL have to remove the downpipe from the exhaust manifold.
yes you can re-ring it...
that still requires a lot of work
removing oil pan rods, piston, head & calling around to see if shops in your area have the right honing tool to clean up the walls for the new piston rings.
If you don't have enough experiance, I would tell you to have a professional do it.

how many miles does it have?
mine needs piston rings, wich I have bought but i have been calling machine shops and they are telling me that i will probably have to bore the block to .20" more and get the right size pistons, My car is smoking real bad so i got the rings for the stock d15b2 pistons but i might have to do ALOT more than I thought, but U should get it tested at the Machine Shop before u buy and RINGS!!! Just a heads up bro, I LOVE SEDANS!!!!

thanks guys. ive built motors before. just new to the honda game. so i wasnt sure about it. i just found out the motor has no compression across the board so im starting to think it has a blown head gasket. what do you guys think?

If it's a blown head gasket then why re-ring?
Have you tried putting a cap of oil in the cylinders to see if you get compression up?
Or done anything like a leakdown test to see where you loosing compression?
