In the process of doing a B20 Vtec swap and came across this in the local classifieds:
"b16 cable tranny with spoon LSD and new syncros no grind guaranteed 700"
Now I'm not even going to begin to say I'm a master mechanic but also do know when things sound too good to be true they usually are. What I would hope to receive from you guys is what to look for so I don't buy into a big clusterf*ck. I know what a b16 tranny looks like but as far as LSD any give away signs without pulling it apart?? I'm sure a Spoon lsd isn't cheap either,is there anyway to know if indeed it is an actual "Spoon" product? Any help would be appreciated-Thanks.

Yeah I've though about that but I've done alot of work to a swap I have but I didn't really save any of the receipts either. I guess what I'm looking for is if their is a way to prove that this is an actual Spoon Lsd transmission. It says LSD on the casing but it their a way to tell by looking at it 1: To tell if it's an LSD (can you put just a regular transmission in a casing that says LSD,is there a way to notice the difference between the two). and 2. Without taking it apart or do I have to have someone take it apart to tell if it's an actual "Spoon".
Honestly bro, nobody is honest on craigslist. I caught a guy in a HUGE lie about a prelude my buddy almost bought and I looked at. He said he did not know why it would not start and that he was bad with cars. It turns out he knows a lot about them and he jumped timing and bent all the valves.
Long story short, don't believe anything on craigslist.

Yeah I realize what your trying to say-I just don't save any of my receipts either but I'd like to think I'm an honest guy. Just hoping theres a way I can identify this before I go take a look at it. I mean there has to be something I can look for or not look for that would show if it's an lsd. No so worry about if it's a Spoon or not but if it's an actual lsd transmission. Thanks

Well if you have someone on here that will vouch for you would definately ease my worries a bit. Just would like it if you had a receipt for the purchase. Spoon Lsd in my eyes is a big purchase and I definately would have saved the receipt and warranty info??

but good luck with finding an answer.. is there any difference between a spoon lsd compared to an oem/kaaz other than what might be stamped on it or the box it came in?
I can vouch for crx-b18c i have bought a few motors and trannys from him and always in great condition w/ papers to showing that they're legit.

Ok i've got a Spoon LSD so i can coment on this.
That box is definely an LSD and its not a factory LSD. Because you can see through the diff you definely have an LSD. Because it has the thinner circumfrance in the middle where it goes narrower this is different to an OEM LSD.
It looks exactly like my Spoon LSD but i'm unsure if its not another aftermarket LSD like a Kaaz or Cusco etc etc. I understand that there are a few Japanese branded LSD's that are made in the same factory, which ones i'm not sure.
To really tell if its a Spoon LSD you need to open the gear box, remove the gearsets and remove the diff and crown wheel. On the side of the diff it will have Spoon stamped on the side in very plain writing. Even if it isn't a Spoon LSD but another aftermarket plate diff it is still awesome and a great upgrade.
The Spoon plate diff was the best modification done to my car. It is unreal the amount of grip and control you have in the corners. The difference between a factory LSD and an aftermarket plate diff is simply incredible. I unfortunely broke mine recently drag racing a B16A with too much grip. It turns out the person who rebuild the gearbox stuffed up big time, you cant run the tappered diff bearings because it limits the oil going into the diff which cause the gears to run hot and then with extra pressure from a large launch will cause it to crunch.
Hope this was of some help.
