Default Which would be the best for my first bike?

Well the time has come for me to buy a bike, but Im a little concerned as to if I am going to be able to handle these bikes. If some of you guys could give me your opinions on the bikes and how they perform that would be great. Im either going to be getting a Yamaha YZF R6 or a GSXR 600. I want to make it clear that I do have moderate expieriance on bikes but this is going to be my first street bike...and for the most part the bike I am going to be learning alot on. My dirt bike is a yz250 and I ride that all the time and Ive also rode my friends kattana 600 a few times. So I have some expieriance with motorcycles and I do know how to ride but I just dont really know what to expect out of these bikes. I heard that the gixxer is extremely hard to keep down so Ive been kinda leaning toward the R6. If you guys could just give me some advice as to which one to go with it would be greatly appreciated.

Matt

Welcome to HT. If you have moderate experience, than those bikes are within your reach. I prefer the gixxer

The R6 will treat you nice as long as you can deal w/ its tempermant. The balance is nothing short of superb as compared to the "top heaviness" of some of the gixxers. Just try to get a chance to sit on an r6 for a good amout of time to see if you can deal w/ the riding position. Sounds like you should be fine as the yz250's make a good amount of power. Also look at the yzf600, for me it seemed a good comprimise between the r6's performance and ease of non competition riding. Don't misunderstand, it ain't no slacker.

If you can ride a 250, you can ride a street bike. Katana is not a good comparison of street bikes...don't buy one. With a 250, you have to be careful of the torque, wheelies galore. If you can keep it down, then you won't have any problems handling a bigger bike like a cbr or r6 or something. My transition was from yz250 to cbr 600...and it was rather smooth.
