Default Intake advice**

I am interested in purchasing an intake for my '98 prelude. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to which one i should get. I know they help with gas mileage and increased speed, but do some work better than others? If so which ones and why! Or if there is another way about obtaining such characteristics through other (not so expensive) means...Thank you!!!

get the AEM cold air intake....despite what the other responses say....the AEM cold air intake has been dyno proven to gain horsepower in the top end.

don't worry about the bypass valve, it sucks, the only way you'll suck in water is if you drive into a puddle and submerge your filter.

do not get a generic filter on a stick short ram....they loose power, although they look cool and sound really nice.

an air intake is an air intake, the do make it louder but they do improve on acceleration in the mid rpm range in the higher gears. thats for CAI. for short rams the power is most noticeable in the higher rpms. and i agree, do not get the aem bypass valve unless you are planning to drive your car across a creek or something. not to mention the loss in velocity. i have a top speed intake on my 99 base lude and it cost $100 less than the aem. i have a friend with a 00 lude and he has an aem. if you put the two next to e/o they are the exact same. only mine looks better. you wont really notice anything with JUST an intake though, besides sound. but combine it with a header and exhaust and you will see the diff. but i def suggest CAI vs short rams. it will make a diff in the hot summers but not as noticable in the winter. if you have the cheese to put out i say get the comptech icebox, pricey, but they say it makes more HP than any CAI on the market. just my buck 2.98

Okay, i understand dont put on the rain piece b/c it decreases the intakes performance, but honestly, what if it rains a lot and i literally have to drive through a huge puddle, will that hurt my engine?
And for those of you that dont believe in intakes, what would you suggest then?

If you don't get the bypass valve and drive through a huge puddle and somehow submerge your filter, then say goodbye to your engine...cuz of hydro lock.

in order to suck enough water through the filter and up the intake to cause hydro lock, you would have to be at WOT and submergerged for a lengthy period of time. the bypass valve is a gimick, it does work but who drives under THAT much water?

Does your 98 prelude have the intake with the "Dynamic chambers"? It has a wider section from the air box to a chamber and then reducing down to a small rubber pipe. This is the improved intake Honda fitted to the Type-S. So, if yours doesn't have it, then buy a used one from a 99+ Prelude and retro-fit it to yours.

I have just bought one from a 99 Prelude and fitted it to my 4th Gen VTEC.

Looks well good. And not really much louder. Cost next to nothing as I bought it from a guy who has bought an aftermarket on for his lude. Now its a 4th Gen VTEC with Type-S intake airbox and pipe!!!

Tim

I also heard bad things about the bypass valve. Under hard acceleration, it allows dirty air from the engine bay to get into your engine. Some kid posted picks of his a while back and it was ugly. As for the rain problem, I'm getting an Iceman because its a two piece design. So right before a big rainstorm you could just relocate the filter on the upper half of the intake, away from any water.

Many people swear by the Iceman intake...As well as the AEM. I personally like the Iceman because it looks somewhat stock still. The black plastic finish looks a little nicer to me than the AEM. I wish i knew more about the Iceman so I could look into it. it might be somehting to look into if you are definately worried about the rain.

Also I heard the plastic doesn't heat up as much as most aluminum intakes do. AEM supposedly is made of heat resistent material. But I don't know whether these claims are real for either brand

AEM looks nice, and sounds nice..
just an intake by itself might give you 2hp to the wheels... might
bottom line, you wont notice..

(the following are randome responses to the other posts)
To the person that said use the search feature... you dont have the privledge yet to flame others..

To the person that said, what if I drive through a puddle deep enough to submerge my filter: JEBUS, NEVER GIVE YOU THE KEYS TO MY CAR.. What if you drive through a lake... ?? bid deal .. if you drive through something that deep, then you also just submerged your exhaust as well ...

To the person that said you have to be at WOT to get hydro lock:
hahahahaha... water, oil, and gas do not mix... at any press of the gas.

If rain is an issue, buy an Iceman and a spare K&N filter - If you expect really torrential rains, disconnect the cold air section and pop the filter onto the underhood stick - this works - I have tried it. I am a firm believer in cold air intakes incidentally - My 97 showed noticable improvement w/ one installed - not seat of pants, but for sure on timeslip.

yeah, but if you want to make your own, you have to make sure you got the right material for it. some tubes that people use are not good for anything and don't resist heat. think about that too.
