Identifying Gaskets(D15B7)
Hello all,
I recently started doing my headgasket for my 93 Civic, I bought the whole head gasket kit which comes with a crap load of gaskets.
Anyways, this being a first job for me, I am having difficulty identifying where they all go, or if they even go on it.
Its a D15B7 and here are the gaskets:
I have numbered them for easy identification
Also, there are 5 gaskets/seals not pictured: The ones that go between the rocker assembly and the head (for the spard plugs) and the one that goes next to the cam gear on the camshaft.
Lastly what would be the easiest way of taking off the cam gear? And if I take it off, I have to put it back on on the same position or else the valves timing will be all off correct? Is there a thing that shows the proper place, or do I just note it when I take it off.
Your help is much apppreciated.

im sure the gaskets that you remove are going to look the exact same as whatever they sent you ( as long as u can get them off in one piece)... it didnt come with a parts list saying what is what??
the best way ive had (assuming you have the VC off) is to loosen the timing belt and slip it off (marking where it was), then you have to loosen the rocker arm assembly, and the cam caps, in the right sequence, from the outside in (if i remember correctly), only loosening them 1/4 turn at a time. Once you have it removed, your cam should just be laying there, with the other end in the dizzy. You might wanna take off your cam sprocket at some point but idk if ur reusing the cam or not. Then it should just slide out of the dizzy.

Ok, I guess I should add some more info, I have taken the head off, with the rocker assembly. All that is left attached to the actual head are the valves and springs, which I do not want to remove. Yes the cam and cam sprocket are off, I just dont how I would go about removing the sprocket from the cam, properly and keepings its "timing" or is there only one way to put it on?
Since it is off I looked around it and I cannot find where the gaskets/seals would go, so Im wondering if they even go on it.

sorry i actually misread the part about the camgear. id just remove it and reset my timing when im all done... that last picture looks like the dowel pins that hold the head on the block... I'd inspect the gaskets on the head and make sure they're all there, if they're in good shape i'd leave em, or if they look like one of the ones in the picture swap it... You should probably make sure u replace the cam seal, which i cant tell from the pics but it should have like a spring on the inside of the rubber seal.
picture #8 looks like a dizzy gasket.
also there should be a tdc indicator on the cam gear. and on the bottom pulley theres an alignment arrow on the actual block.

I am just concerned about if I take the cam gear off the cam, how will I know what is the proper positioning on it after words?
Ah yes, the last picture are those things that were attached to my head when I took it off from the block, I guess they are spacer kinda things? Are there only 2?

#2 looks to possibly be a thermostat gasket. Not the thermostat housing, but for the actual thermostat.
#3 looks like they are the ones for the spark plug tubes, that seal against the valve cover.
#5 looks like it might be for the IACV.
#8 looks like it's the water pump gasket.
#10 looks like the o-rings for the water pipe; the pipe that connects from the water pump to the thermostat housing.
#13 is the throttle body gasket.
#14 is the gasket for the front water outlet (where the other radiator hose attaches to).
#15 is for an EGR valve, which you don't have.
One of the rubber o-rings might be for the breather box (the black box) on the back of the block.
Another one of the rubber o-rings could be for the distributor.
That's all I could think of.

Yes I was looking at the cam and cam gear, and they have notches where they go into each other, I was wondering if there was only one way it goes on.

not sure how many dowelpins are supposed to be there i think some are like recessed in the head or block, i think i lost a couple too, car runs fine haha. agreed with civicspoon there is a tiny woodruff key (dont lose it), but i actually had a gear that didnt have one, rather it had like a built in one (which broke and sheared and f***ed up y timing)... other than that, if u didnt mark where the cam gear was in proportion to your head when u removed it, you should probably set ur timing from scratch...
Also, I have to take off the crank pulley to get the timing belt cover off the redo the timing. Im having a hella of a time trying to take it off.
Could I use a pneumatic gun to take it off? ANd to take it off I must spin it counter clock wise right?

In my experience the only way to get that pulley off is with an impact gun. As I remember (and I think we have the same engine) the base of the pulley is rubberized so you can't really bolt a steering wheel puller onto it and crank away with a breaker bar 'cause you risk trashing the pulley. I have heard some people say that they also used a smoke hammer to help it off. Don't know how that works out with the rubber though.
My friend lent me this tool that is a bar and has like bolts that are on the end that fit into the holes on the pulley so that I can keep it still. I guess another way of doing what the Haynes book tells you to do by sticking a screwdriver in the flywheel kinda thing.
ANyways Im going to go get one from my GFs dad and try it out.

Im having some trouble getting the cam gear off the cam, if anyone could give me some tips on how to remove it. Btw it is removed from the head.

Yes I am, its just hard trying to get a hold of it without damaging the lobes. Ima just leave it and if it starts to leak Ill replace it then...
Im putting my head back together and I cant find the torque specs for the whole rocker arm assembly, the Haynes book doesnt have it or I dont know the actual name for it...
