Noise & Black Smoke from under the hood...
Hi,
I've got a 2002 Honda Odyssey EX. Twice in the last 7 days it has exhibited some very odd behavior. The first time it was idling and there was a noise under the hood that sounded almost like popcorn popping (my wife's description) or if you put a pencil in and out of a moving fan (my description). It then started smoking profusely. I immediately turned it off, popped the hood, and inspected. Found nothing visually wrong from what I could see. All fluid levels fine and nothing dripping on the ground. Turned it back on again shortly after and it functioned perfectly for 5 days. Then it happened again. This time my wife was driving and she thinks the cadence of the noise increased with acceleration and noticed a definite heat when she got out and went to the front. She stopped and turned it off. Had it towed to our trusted mechanic and he could find no evidence of any problem ( he didn't start taking stuff apart though). I have since been driving it for 2 days since the last episode and it is running normally.
Does anyone have any idea what it might be?
Thanks in advance.

Black smoke? That would usually be fire of some sort... I don't know of any issues that would cause that. Did you see if any wires are messed up? Maybe hitting a fan or a pully?
