The VSS signal runs through a splice in the harness. The splice is probably loose. Instead of untapeing the harness. By-pass the "open". Tap into the wire at the speedometer and run a separate wire directly to the ECU at the VSS input.

ejvtec, I am having the same problem only my speedo doesn't work at all. I don't think I would by-pass the wire to the speedo to the ecu though. I have checked all my wiring for wear or a break and found nothing??? I am beginning to believe that I have a ecu problem on my car....

Well, You could run the by-pass as a temp test

if youve got a code 17, and the speedo isnt working, more than likely its your vss on the tranny (under the intake just below the throttle body...tons of posts about this, read up to figure out how to replace...

nevermind guys, my code is gone...weird...

Just replace the VSS under the intake. It will go bad pretty soon if it's having problems, mine was the same way. The part only cost $20, and only took 20 minutes to replace. All you need is a screwdriver, 12mm socket, and 20" of extensions.
