89 CRX Si. Backfiring in engine i think.
When car is ideling it sounds alright. But when i put it gear and start to drive away, i loose power wether slowly accelerating or floring it. The only way i can get the car to move a little is by keeping accelerator floored and pumping clutch. Thats right, poping clutch and pumping accelerator pedal. And somewhere in between car farts through exhaust and appears to be backfiring in the engine. If you can imagine, working my way to 2nd gear while pumping both feet? I'll be out of breath. I might as well run! And i'll probbably run faster than the car does at this time.
By the way, Iv changed spark plugs oil & filter, and fuel filter. Also, when i changed fuel filter i noticed chunks of rust come out so i drainned fuel tank as well. The reason is that i had run out of gas about 2 days prior to breaking down.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

try adding some fuel injector cleaner, **** maybe even some octane booster just to flush some of that crap out.
could also Seafoam the fuel system.

Yep. Bone dry. Chunks of rust kept coming out of filter. and rusted fuel. I got some lucas fuel stabilizer but that didn't quite do anything. However, i did use one of those fuel injector cleaners and that's what helped me get the car started again. Do you supose adding another or even another after that might help? Or Will it damage the engine? Oh, and what about the backfireing? I went as far as even re-timing the crank & cam but no improvement. Thanx guys. Anymore suggestions would be appreciated cause i'm freakin stumpped.

from Wikipedia:
Exhaust system backfires occur in engines that have an emission system malfunction, like an air injection system diverter valve problem, an exhaust leak, or when the catalytic converter has been removed. In some high-performance vehicles, when a driver shifts up and lets off the accelerator, the engine has a moment of running rich. This causes an incomplete burn which causes the fumes to explode in the exhaust system along with an audible clacking sound. However this condition is a result of working smog equipment, and is unlikely to cause any damage.
A fuel injected engine may backfire if an intake leak is present (causing the engine to run lean), or a fuel injection component such as an air-flow sensor is defective.
Common causes of backfires are:
Poor or unregulated engine timing is often a cause of intake backfires, but can also be responsible for exhaust backfires
Improper wiring in the ignition can also lead to timing issues and backfires
Low fuel pressure, clogged fuel filters, and weak fuel pumps could cause a severe lean air-to-fuel ratio during fuel injection
Missing or damaged catalytic converter can result in backfires out the tailpipe

I'm gonna go with the idea that that my timing is off simply because the car does not have the timing belt cover and im kind of calculating where the marks should be. If anyone has a clear pic of what it should look like id like to see it please. I know the crank pulley has 3 marks right next to eachother and then the 1 more mark an inch or two away. The three marks i believe should be right at 12 o'clock @ tdc. And the cam pulley should show up @ 12'oclockish right? Or the 2 side lines should be leveled with the surface of the head? Or is it more important to line up the 7 o'clock mark, than it is to level the 2 side markings with the head surface.
