Default full h22a swap VS h22a h2b swap??

ok so ive been searching for quite some time about this issue. i have a 94 dx hatch w/ b18b and GSR tranny. my question is, what is more cost effective? the full h22a vtec swap? or the h2b swap?

if i go h2b i can sell the b18b for about $350

if i go full h22a swap, i can sell my whole swap for about $1200

i can get a h22a4 w/ non-lsd tranny for $1600 shipped and the mounts and axels with cost about another $400

were as i can get a h22a4 motor for about $1000 shipped and the QSD h2b kit for another $700-800.....

for some reason this is a really hard choice for me!

any input is great! (except negative input)

i keep hearing this. i have no experience with the h trannys, however, i do have experience with 90-93 accord tranny's. im not really a big fan of cable trannys. im leaning more towards the h2b but both have there ups and downs

h2b is over all better due to gearing and waht not. you will save money because you use the same axles, mounts, transmission, shifter, ect. I'd go h2b.

p.s. search.

Go h2b. All you would need is the h22a longblock, the qsd kit, and some headers that will fit.

the only thing better about the b series tranny is the availability of parts and the fact that they will produce more torque from their higher final drives. plus the gears in say a s4c/y80/s80/y2 or y21/ys1 are closer than the m2a4 or m2b4'. you can always pick up a 4.64 final drive kit from Gearspeed or Mfactory for $500+. Mfactory also has a 5.15 if you really want to get down the 1/4 mile but you would be doing around 4,000 at 68mph or so with 15" rims on a 50 series tire wall

B series trans all the way. Better axle angle, stock fitment of the setup, and just overall less modification to the chassis to make things work...

I've had an h series trans in my car and I currently have a b series trans, I like the b series trans better than my old H tranny...

The H2B kit would be the way to go. You would be getting H22 power with the better gear ratios/aftermarket support of the B-series trans. Like other have stated, you will be able to use your b-series axles, clutch and shift linkages

h2B my friend. Would you want to deal with having to weld everything back (trans mount, shifter area) if you decide to go h2b or put your stock swap back in if you have/need to sell your car? Poor overall axle angle that could possibly mean constantly changing axles because they break? Not to mention not very good ground clearance and a trans (because of the cables) that has issues shifting at high rpms when you really get on it? Thats my opinion. My brother goes through all those problems and causes him to dislike his car (and this is a Honda fanatic mind you). Now he wants to go H2B. Let the welding/headaches begin!

thanks for all the info guys!!!! this really helps me narrow it down!!!!

pretty sure my setup is going to consist of:

f20b vtec
skunk2 IM
gsr tranny
stg2 clutch w/10lbs flywheel
custom header
3in exhaust
qsd h2b kit

and tuned on crome!

should be fun in a 2200lbs car

The F20B is a great motor. I have a built one (just need a few more parts before its done est March 2010) and my brother has a stock one with some goodies in a stripped coupe and its a rocket. So you should have alot of fun. Good luck

And just for future reference, the axle angle is poor on h22a swaps into the civic. It's not a myth. I have a friend here with a boosted H22 and ge goes through axles like crazy. I, on the other hand, hae been using the same used autozone axles for over a year. I have even broken an act pressure plate on slicks and the axles are still doin just fine.

it also depends on what mounts you are using. i have the traditional h22 swap in my ej7 and have had the same axles for over 5 years(they are avid racing axles btw). i think the fact that your friends car is turbo doesn't help his axles problem. perhaps he wasn't using high HP axles.

If I had to do it all over, I'd go h2b. I don't see the axle issues though with the stock h22 trans like everyone else is having. We are on slicks, launching at 7k using stage 0 dss axles an innovative mounts and never had an issue. Yes we have had transmission issues though, locking us out of gears and such the big thing about this is what shifter mechanism you use. There are two, the metal type, and the plastic type ( almost like the k's use ) , the plastic one is 10x better.
