It is not the "only way to know"; Everyone that messes with transmissions should know this:
put it in 5th gear, (use a screwdriver in the shift rod hole,find neutral(halfway between all the way in and all the way out), to find
5th, turn it clockwise hard, and pull back hard),now clamp a pair of vise grips on the input shaft and make a mark on the case where the handle is pointing; now count how many times the diff turns for exactly 1 turn of the input shaft. 3.46 (almost 3.5)turns is the GSR, 3.04 (a hair over 3)turns is the LS. Easier to do than to explain. BTW. those numbers are derived from multiplying the 5th gear ratio times the final drive ratio.
