New 2001 S2000 owner
Just purchased my 2001 S2000 with 69,000 miles yesterday though I am not picking it up til tomorrow (Monday) because I asked them to put the stock radio back into the car. It currently has an aftermarket Alpine (with the tiny little buttons everywhere) and a big subwoofer in the trunk and an amp in the trunk as well. Since I'm going to be putting my golf clubs in the trunk and other stuff I'd like all the room I can get back there and I'd also like to utilize the radio controls to the left of the steering wheel. Chose the S2000 over an 03 Audi 4-seater coupe (hardtop) that had 110,000 miles on it.
- by all accounts sounds like I'm going to be disappointed with the stock radio. Although I must say even the aftermarket Alpine sounded pretty weak to me. Wonder if I should just leave the Alpine in there???
- the previous owner turned over a car cover, ragtop cover, two sets of keys and the old stock radio however there was no owners manual. Maybe it's in the "secret compartment" I've just learned of. I will check tomorrow!
- any solution for wind noise from center (above rear-view mirror) of ragtop? it was a bit annoying and I'm hoping that I can fix that.
- shifting into 6th gear...from 5th gear seems like it kind of wants to go to 4th gear more naturally than 6th....anyone else experience this???
- Is premium gas a necessity for the S2000 or just recommended. The used car dealer guy said that I could put the cheap stuff in it but if Honda recommends the good stuff than that's what I'm thinking I need to put in it.
Thanks in advance for this forum and your responses. I would welcome any advice for this new 2001 S2000 owner!

welcome, it depends on the alpine model. some models work well with the left hand radio controls (if they have the modifry DCI), the stock radio will leave you underwhelmed. just ask to keep the alpine radio so you can find out more about the model and features.
for the wind noise, some put rubber o-rings on the hook of the latch to tighten things up some (s2ki.com has info on this). your seals could probably use some shin-etsu grease or einzett gummi pflege. this is a pretty bare bones roadster, so you will hear some wind noise.
for 6th, i just shift down and away and im fine. mine did go into 4th yesterday while driving, but
engine is meant to run off 91 octane or higher (not racing fuel thou). it is in the owners manual.

Keep the aftermarket radio setup in there! You can get and interface to use the factory controls if there is not one already in there. "PAC" makes one as does "modifry". There are others as well... I recommend modify.

Shifting from 5th to 6th should be easy, although it takes some time to get used to if your new to 6 speeds.
You cannot and should not put cheap gas in the S. It's 91 or better only.
You should not have wind noise coming from the front like that. Take gospeedgo1's advise. Here is a post with the o-ring mod he is talking about.

This is really more for squeaking thought, and not wind noise.

Thanks for the welcomes/responses! I picked up my S2000 today and the stock radio actually sounds pretty decent (much better than the Alpine that was in there on Saturday when I test drove the car)! It's amazing how much of a difference in the audio it makes by simply resting your leg next to the clutch (slightly against the driver door speaker).
I was hoping to find the owners manual in the "secret compartment" however it was empty. Anyone have a recommendation on where I can get a 2001 S2000 owners manual?

your car "can" run on less than premium gas, but youre gonna feel the shitty difference. I dont know about long term damage, if any, to using cheaper gas, but like others have said... honda manual says to use premium only.
