Howdy.
I have a 1993 civic dx with a d16z6 swap. I also swapped the gauge cluster. The car has been running great for the past few months. today at a red light I noticed the tach needle had dropped to zero while the engine was idling. I revved the engine and the tach acted normal, returned to about 800 rpm's, then dropped to zero while the engine idled normally.

I have done some searching and will be checking the wiring after work. does anyone else have any ideas or input on what may be going on? Do clusters go bad very often?
Any help will be appreciated!

 

ummm curious about this one. i have no idea to be honest, wiring would be my first guess, not the tach it self

 

Your tach is lazy, you need to keep your tach active, gun it to 8000 rpm, and if it still lazy take it to 10k rpm. That'll show the tach who is the boss...JK

Probably loose wires/connection, but then it could be the tach itself.

 

My tach does the same thing, If i hit it with my knuckle, it bounces back up.

So i know that it is not the distributor side, and I think that the cold weather has gotten to it as if i run the heat and then hit it a few times it will read correctly.
