alternator rebuilds
anyone ever had an alternator rebuilt? a friend's went out and local parts stores want $170 with his core, what about having a place rebuild it? also, what is it that goes bad in alternators? the windings? or the points? thanks.
i got one rebuilt once but i made the mistake of letting the guy talk me into amping it up and never worked right again ~ i finally ended up throwin it away.
When mine went south I traded it in towards a rebuilt. I should have had my original rebuilt! The replacements were pretty crappy. One lasted 6 months, the other a year. I think it would have been around $70 to have mine done.
What normally goes on them is the brushes. A good rebuilder will replace those as well as cut down the armature if needed. Also bearings would be replaced if needed.
