are 96 rear plastics different from 97+?

are 96 rear plastics different from 97+?
i have an ek hatch im working on an installed the large rear quarter plastics. i noticed there is a large gap where the carpets meets the rear seats. i was told i have the wrong plastics an the plastics to 96's are specific because they have no rear support safety bar only 97's+ do any help is appreciated
