Default shaved valve covers

anyone know anything about shaving a valve cover?

like when i trim down the raised lettering and whatever else i take off, do i have to make sure i get that area as flat as possible, or is there a type of filler i can use before paint to make it all smooth? just curious because i picked up another vc to do this to, hopefully this weekend.

depends on what you plan to finish it with. if you want to powder coat it you have to make the metal perfect with little to no sanding scratches. the way i did mine was to take a dremel with a fine stone take off all the letter etc, then use an autobody finishing filler to fill in the imperfections from the dremel then blocked sanded it with 220 then a couple coats of high build primer then block sand 320 then paint turned out okay. i'll see if i have a pic before i ****ed it up.

im planning to just primer and paint it. no powder coating or anything. i was just wondering, if i was to use a filler, how that would hold up with engine temps and such.

how did yours get ****ed up? something that just happened, or something you did?

i was impatient and painted it before i swapped the motor/tranny and my mounts were shot and the valve cover hit the hood. the filler is holding up good for about 3 months now just been to busy/lazy to pull off the vavle cover and repaint

you can see in this pic it's just all scratched etc, but the filler and paint are holding up great
