Default 2 quick 90 Accord questions!!

What's up people! Having some problems, hoping someone her can help me out. First of all My 90 Accord (f22a1) has a stutter when I accelerate. I changed out the O ring on the distributor and it stopped for almost a full day but came back, I noticed that one of the washers that should be on the top of the distributor is located between the cap and the lower housing (the part the cap bolt to), could this be the problem? My second question is 2nd gear and fifth grinds, someone said it's my synchro's. Can some explain how that works? I've looked online with no luck.......Thanks!

Yes, if it only grinds in 2nd and 5th then I would say its your brass synchros that are going out which will cause gear clash.

No, it has nothing to do with your clutch (directly, anyways). The synchros are an internal part of the transmission. You can probably lessen the issue if you run some GM Synchromesh Manual Transmission fluid in it.

Yes, GM fluid in a Honda.

It's not the end of the world, people are even putting it in BRAND NEW Honda manual gearboxes to remedy 3rd gear pop-out issues.

Do I need to drain the transmission or just add to the existing fluid?

You will need to drain the existing fluid out before filling with the GM Synchromesh.

redline mtf is also a great choice. i've used it in my last 2 transmissions and couldn't be happier. expensive but it really does work.

Do you mean remove the transmission and drain it or just pull the plug and let the fluid that comes out drain and refill?

Yes, remove the lower drain plug and let it drain for a few minutes.

Just a heads up, ALWAYS make sure you can remove the fill plug before draining the fluid!

I ended up stopping by the honda dealership and the parts department had never heard of using GM fluid in a Honda (not saying it won't work of course), but they were skeptical about trying it. They told me try refilling the tranny with Honda manual transmisson fluid after draining the old out. I'm going to try that first and I'll let you know how it turns out, Thanks everyone!

I'm running GM Synchromesh in my T2T4 LSD trans right now. Its nice and smooth. I've heard that redline stuff will also eliminates grind as well.

It shudders from about 1500rpm to 2000 rpm right?

Your shuddering is due to your EGR ports being completely plugged up.

Are you really surprised that the *HONDA* parts department recommended using HONDA fluids?

I would check both the distributor cap and the rotor for carbon tracks. I would also check the ignition wires and make sure they haven't become pourous.

On the transmision: someone in the past replaced the transmission fluid with engine oil. This combined with marginal lubrication (even in the best of times) from a design issue, wore the 5th gear syncro's and in your case, the 2nd gear's as well. You'll have to determine what you want to do, and how much you can afford.
