Icon6 99 LX Check Engine Light

Hey Fellas, Just picked up my new commuter car. A 99 civic LX 1.6L, one owner, with 102k, this thing is cherry!! Now to the point at hand. The check engine light is on and the seller stated that its been on for almost two years now and when it first came on they took it to the dealer and they cleared code and replaced plugs, wires, dist. cap and rotor totaling a 500+ repair bill. Well she stated that within a few days the light came back on and has been on ever since. ( I would have drove my happy tail back to the dealer)

Well its my baby now and she runs great! All I notice is a bit of a elevated idle (between 1500-2000 RPM's. On my 94 lx when the light came on and there was nothing noticable it turned out to be the O2 sensor.

So do you guys think that it could be my sensor or something else due to the minor elevation in idle. Yall are the pros................help me out! By the way, how and where do check what the CEL is telling me. I know on my 94 is was under the dash on pass. side.

All help of course is greatly appreciated!!!!

Thanks!!

-->Cueto

you need a scanner
the data port is under the dash on the drivers side
scan the code and tell us what it is

An OBDII scanner can reveal more detailed information, but is not absolutely necessary.

The jumper wire method is for those who want the convenience of pulling CEL codes at home.

both of you are correct. I ended up buying a scanner for a relatively cheap price. but either way, you need to know what the light is for. No point in guessing.

Ok! I wasnt sure if my 99 had the data port or not. Thats alot easier than my 94. I will go to adavanced auto and have it scanned and let you know what code it tells me. I will do this this afternoon. I agree with anything free!!!!

thanks Fellas

all 1996- are obd2 via uncle sam's emissions
the jumper wire will make the light flash the code
take that number get on here look up the code

i prefer to just scan it and see the code
it's easier and i'm lazy
what type of scanner and how much?
you pay for the options on them

Ok So I had it scanned at my local autoparts store. Here they are:

PO 505 Idle control....
PO 1337 Misfire....

Like I mentioned before........it does idle a bit high (around 1800 rpm) when its cold. Other than this it is un-noticable. The Idle control valve is $199.00 Im unsure about the misfire, could these be related?? I cant hear or feel it missing! Guy at the auto store said run some fuel injector cleaner through it and that I could maybe "clean" the idle control valve.

Yall's Thoughts??........................................ ...............................

Yea I just looked up the 1337 code provided on here and it states RPM malfuntion. DA at the autoparts....I believe both codes can be related..............

P1337 is a fault in the CKF sensor circuit. Check whether it is simply unplugged.

Next, reset the ECU and drive the car to see whether both codes repeat. You only want to troubleshoot repeated codes.

Reset the ECU by removing the 7.5A Back Up fuse under the hood for a few minutes.

The diagram shows the CKF sensor, which is located behind the lower timing belt cover. However, the CKF sensor connector is exposed and emerges from the top of the upper timing belt cover. Check whether it is connected.

Thanks ron. The sensor is plugged in. I also removed 7.5 fuse under hood. When I started car it came back on.
Is there a way to clean idle control valve or should I try something else?? Or just replace idle unit?
Again.......thanks

Did you pull the codes again? Did both codes repeat?

Pull the codes to figure out if one, both, or none of the codes repeated.

UPDATE: had codes checked today and only one repeat this time. P1 337 description: ignition manufacturer malfunction/misfire
I cleared the code, but came back on on startup. I went ahead and got 4 NGK plugs and fuel system cleaner even though no misfire
Is felt. Could this be some kind of sensor? Still has 1500-1800 rpm when cold. After warmed up she's fine.

Thanks

P1337 indicates a fault in the CKF sensor circuit. Either the sensor, the wires, or less commonly the ECU is bad.

Where should I go with this? Inspect sensor and all associated wiring? How much does an ECU run? And finally, if I were to leave it alone will it cause any damage?

Why not replace the sensor?

That would prolly be a good start!! How much does the sensor cost and is it a dealer only item?? thanks for all advice?

Oh and is it hard to replace? It looks like its in a damn tight spot!
