Questions about painting a CRX
Okay guys, so here's the scoop. I'm looking at buying a CRX, it's in pretty good shape, minus the surface rust that it's got. The only actual rust hole is above the driver side rear quarter panel and it's about two inches long and an inch wide. But, my question is, how would I go about getting rid of the rust and painting it. I'm a noob to this stuff, and I really don't have much cash to paint it professionally. I was thinking about the $50 paint job but I've read many things about why to stay away from painting it that way.
Please any suggestions will help.
BD.
Ps. The car is missing the trim on both sides of the doors, where do I buy this?

a rust 'gash' like that should be cut out with a new piece welded in and shaped.
smaller rust can could be ground out and filled but that large an area may go deep. you may try pulling the panels back and seeing if there is rust on the back side of it.
unless you mean an actual hole in the body, in which case, ya is has to be trimmed out and replaced.
if you don't have the money then it isn't going to be in reach to fix it right. but in this case that is where the $50 one comes in. it's a better than nothing type thing for beater/daily driver. and if you just wanted it done for a small area it is more reasonable for a later professional job.
you should probably also wait for a professional answer...

Giving you step by step directions on how to do it will confuse you, and its not practical. Its not something u can be good at after a try or reading and gettig the idea of it. You have to understand what your doing and why your doing it. My best suggestion if you are even thinking of doing it yourself read the new upcoming edition of Haynes Car bodywork Repair Manual to give you an understanding of the trade. That all under the assumption you want to take it serious and if not go read a typical diy fiberglass quarter panel repair.
Rust right through the panel needs to be patched. its its just surface, and not too deep (can tell by the size of pits) sandblast is best, if you cant do that then grid it out as best you can and rust-mort it. let it dry and put on putty to fill the pinholes (not bondo!) If your doing the $50 paintjob is a mistake. it may look good for a season but if your putting all that hard work into repairing the rust...take it to a body shop for paint. As well as that kind of paintjob can peel very easily. Not worth it. Do it right or not at all.
Thank you all for your replies.
Night: Thank you for telling me I'd rather need a professionals opinion, instead of feeding me answers that may not be the best, thats greatly appreciated.
Skthx: Thank you for giving me reference material to look up. I don't have access to many of the tools or anything to get my car painted or even do it by myself, as I'm only 17 + no dad around with tools. But it is appreciated for your response.
Boost4prez: I wish more people were around like you to stay away from Bondo. I've read many of the audio forums on the web as I'm a great fan of music, and they say to use quality materials such as products from Rage.
Thank you all for the responses. Greatly appreciated.
