Default Transmission talk

Does anybody have some good articles they can link to read about transmissons? I have a few questions that i would like cleared up. The first being does the gearing of a transmisson directly affect the powerband of a motor? Eg, if i swap an h22 into an eg and run a h22 tranny vs an ITR tranny will the power bands be different? What are the overall effects of a final drive gear, and last but not least, the affects shorter/taller gearing has on acceleration.

1) HowStuffWorks.com, Wikipedia.com, Encarta.com
2) yes, gearing affects power band.
3) not sure what you're asking with the final drive gear
4) shorter = faster, taller = slower, in terms of acceleration. shorter = slower, taller = faster, in terms of velocity.

From the way that I have understood it, the size of the gear will affect mph.

Shorter gears will accelerate faster but you will only get to so many mph. Longer gears will accelerate slower, but will go higher into the MPHs.

you're juggling peak-torque, traction, and "top speed" for your ideal gearing.

your torque curve won't be significantly different in shape, but it will be different in terms of where the torque begins and ends. With shorter gears, in simplified terms it would deliver the powerband sooner and faster. With longer gears, it will be later and more gradual.

so your ideal gearing would be the shortest one where you can still retain traction, reach peak torque only a few hundred RPM before redline, and have a top speed thats appropriate for you.

I think thats correct, sorry if i worded it awkwardly haha.

thats a good picture of it, albeit not a prelude but it delivers. the numbers represent the final drive gear ratios on an S2000.
